<< About forms of Ateism - there isnt one out there that isnt stupid. Atheism is an atrocity waiting to happen.

See? Its a stupid blanket statement.

(In case anyone misunderstands, I would not say the above italicized statement. Its there to illustrate that blanket statements like that get us nowhere in terms of tolerance and understanding).
>>

It's spelled Atheism, by the way ;)

I agree that such statements won't help a bit in convincing the other party.

I prefer to show my reasoning:

Religions are ideologies. Together with some other ideologies (like Nazism, Atheism, and the ideologies behind certain racism groups (e.g., the KKK)), religions belong to the group of intolerant ideologies, i.e., ideologies which will actively resist any ideas, opinions and information which do not comply with the ideology, for the simple reason that these kind of things will destroy it.

Knowledge is fought with ignorance and blind faith.

The gruesome deeds committed in the name of these ideologies are often too horrific to describe, yet should not be forgotten, for they show us what happens when an intolerant ideology gains too much power.

Optimus, no disrespect intended, but the above is a reasoning based on commonly known facts. If you feel like discussing it, I prefer that you do so in a civilized manner and try to stick to facts and stay clear of metaphysics.

Thank you.

I think you'll find that people of every race, religion, and creed have proved themselves stupid throughout history. And they've used every excuse to do so. Think of all the attrocities committed in the name of "love" or "patriotism" too - just as many, just as bad. People will use any excuse to do what they want, and deeply held things like love, patriotism, fear, religion, hope - they all make great excuses and tools if people so desire.

<< Im tired of tolerating closed minded religious people that try and shove their belief system down my throat (and I have met very few Christians that do not feel the need to say something about their cult every couple of minutes). I wish every one of them would leave me alone. My lack of faith is none of their business and my soul does not need saving. >>

Hey I agree. Most people around me don't know what religion, if any, I am. I'm not a "ram it down people's throats" kinda guy. I'm very normal (relatively speaking). :)

And when the Whitnesses come knocking at my door I get just as cheesed. I say unless someone asks or it comes up, don't go bringing it up. Live your life as you believe and thats what you do. :)

<< And I consider atheism to pretty much be a religion unto itself. >>

Uh oh - now some of the Ateists are going to have a real bone to pick with you on that!

<< Plus, most Christians have a hard time laughing about religion. If a Catholic cant laugh at the pope he shouldnt be alive. Period. If you cant laugh at yourself who can you laugh at? >>

Heh - not me. As long as someone isn't really trying to attack or mock or hurt, I laugh a lot. "My Catholic guilt" I'm always complaining about...

Ever see "Dogma"? A church-going Catholic poking fun at our own religion. I laughed my butt off at that movie! Its a shame a lot of people on both sides didn't get it.

Sorry, you mean because religion says "This is truth", it is therefor an ideology, and dangerous?

Oh yeah? So's your momma. That is, your momma would be, if indeed she, and everyone else, really exists and isn't a figment of a communal psyche that... ;)

But this thread was about religion, so I focused on the religious side of things. There are more atrocities committed in the name of religion than anything else in my opinion, but people are generally stupid and will kill for anything that they think is a good enough reason. Id be bashing Capitalists if there was a thread saying Communism or Socialism is dumb and vice versa.

I believe the 10 commandments are a good basis for morals but I wont go into religion anymore than that. My personal beliefs are just that, personal.

Let'em. They can kiss my butt. I could have also mentioned that every religion is basically a cult, but I thought I would leave that out for a later discussion.

The "Catholic Guilt"... That is the only religion based on guilt. No other religion I know of makes its followers feel as bas as Catholicism. Well, maybe except for that cult that made you do your own castration.... Dogma was hilarious. It would have been just as funny had I still been Catholic.

<< The story had nothing to do with my mom's comprehension of catholicism. It had to do with the fact the she was not taught the bible, but rather that she was told all the things she couldn't do, and forced to memorize a list of prayers to say when she did those things anyway. >>

Okay, but didn't you also say this:

<< Don't you remember Exodus?" she replies with basically this: "We didn't read the bible at church or school. We studied the catechism (hope I spelled that right). basically we learned a big lists of sins we shouldn't commit, and canned prayers to recite"
What a stupid religion.
>>

It sounds like this has everything to do with your mom's comprehension of catholicism. Just because she didnt get jack out of it doesn't mean that nobody does.

<< This was not only in a catholic school, but also in 20 years of catholic church. The fact that a good portion of the mass was in latin, a language which no one in the place knew, doesn't really help my view of catholicism. >>

I'm sorry, are churches supposed to spoon feed you?

<< And no one in here has said anything conflicting with the title of my thread. Sure, you've called me dumb, and you've called my mom dumb, but no one has insunuated that anything about Catholicism is intelligent. >>

You are right. Religion isn't a question of intelligencel, its a question of belief and faith.

And as a side note: Not all of us Christians try to shove our beliefs down other peoples throats. I may not agree with what everybody else believes, but I won't tell you that you are wrong and I'm right. And I'm not going to call your beliefs/religion stupid! I hate it when people do this as much as anybody!

I don't think it's fair to call a religion dumb based upon only the experiences of your mother in one school. I doubt you're basing that conclusion purely on this though...based upon other things I'd also say it's dumb. I was confirmed and went to church all the time and all that crap and when I was in grade 10 quickly managed to push away all the guilty feelings about my hatred towards church (god it's boring) and all the crap surrounding it and decided enough was enough.

<< What a stupid religion. >>

Just when I thought the stupid posts on religion and politics couldn't be surpassed by some of the more famous ones in recent AT history, you go and post something like this. Do you have to post your inflammatory crap? I mean, could you not word it a little more nicely instead of coming off as a complete anti-Catholic bigot? It seems that no person who would post something like what you did could form a proper logical argument, so maybe I shouldn't have replied. As for the mods, I wish they would do the right thing and close this.

Be a man and say it to your mom's face, if you want your opinion to impact someone. Although I don't recommend it.

gee thanks monkey.. I will take that as you being helpful. ;)

I know what the definition of a cult is but the connotations associated with the word are why I questioned you associating it with christianity. But I gave up on these topics a long time ago......so again thanks for trying to be helpful.

I won't even bother to respond to someone who obviously is just looking to start an argument. I have better things to do, like laundry and such. ;) I just had to post about this:

<< Optimus is our favorite resident Catholic. >>

I presume your what... 15? 16?

Heres a piece of advice, dont attack a man's religion. EVER. Whether it be a blanket statement or pinpointed. Doing so makes you ignorant. I was simply saying something that was equally as pointless and grounded in nothing.

Catholicism is "common-sense challenged"

The moment I read that, I thought, "Optimus, Elledan"

And sure enough ;)

Cheers ! :)
