I'm sorry I posted this. And I'm stupid for not anticipating the flames all around.

My opinion hasn't changed, however, my apologies to anyone who was insulted.

Thats not Catholic, thats "Catholic School".

And if anyone makes it through "Catholic School" having any real knowledge of the Catholic faith, I'd eat my hat.

Well, that would be an option, if the story had anything to do with her comprehension of anything.

<< Catholicism is dumb. >>

from the sound of the story, it appears that the person is ingnorant
does not make the religion dumb
now, organized religion is dumb
more people have killed each other in the name of religion through mans history
than many other deaths

Didn't it have to do with her understanding the religion in Catholic School?

Just because your mom does not remember the locusts from Catholic school does not make Catholicism dumb.

Quick pertinent question though, did your mom ride the short bus to Catholic school?

OK, the old testament touches at least 4 major religions (Christianity, Catholicism (those can often be counted as one religion), Judaism, and Muslim).

Knowledge, or lack of knowledge, of the contents of the book of Exodus is a result of how much one read/remembers it.

In your mom's case, she attended a school that did a VERY poor job of instructing in the Catholic faith, and actually only presented their own version, centering on the parts they could use to keep the kids in line. Thats a piss-poor job that school did, but reflects little on the Catholic faith itself.

If your mom went to a Driving School and sucked at driving because the instructor concentrated on messing with the radio and doing "doughnuts", you could hardly then decide (and post a thread entitled) "Driving Cars is Dumb".

Speaking of dumb...isn't kinda dumb to call Catholicism dumb based on your mom not knowing anything about Catholicism, especially if the discussion arose from events in "The Mummy."

I agree - I think notfred should pick a better title than he currently has.

<< All I learned in Catholic School was don't piss off the nuns! >>

I swear, %99 of the "catholic" schools chased more people away from what they think the catholic faith is than anything else I can imagine. It really makes me sad.

And yes, some of those nuns could be really scary!!! :)

<< What a stupid religion. >>

There isnt one out there that isnt stupid. Every religion is an atrocity waiting to happen.

The story had nothing to do with my mom's comprehension of catholicism. It had to do with the fact the she was not taught the bible, but rather that she was told all the things she couldn't do, and forced to memorize a list of prayers to say when she did those things anyway.

This was not only in a catholic school, but also in 20 years of catholic church. The fact that a good portion of the mass was in latin, a language which no one in the place knew, doesn't really help my view of catholicism. I think a religion based almsot entirely on ritual and tradition is stupid.

And no one in here has said anything conflicting with the title of my thread. Sure, you've called me dumb, and you've called my mom dumb, but no one has insunuated that anything about Catholicism is intelligent.

About forms of Ateism - there isnt one out there that isnt stupid. Atheism is an atrocity waiting to happen.

See? Its a stupid blanket statement.

(In case anyone misunderstands, I would not say the above italicized statement. Its there to illustrate that blanket statements like that get us nowhere in terms of tolerance and understanding).

I want to point out that largely it is the people that commit these henious acts. It is no more justifyied for you to claim that Islam or catholiscism is stupid because of the actions of a few then it is for me to claim that atheism is stupid because the occasional athiest happens to be disturbed and turns out to a serial killer or something equally repulsive. IT is true that the members of the catholic church and many other religions has commited many atrocities but to blame their religion for them is just as perverse as those christians who tell everyone they are going to hell.

What must been seen is that people of everyone backround, be it faith or race commit acts which we would consider abnormal at best. However more often thatn not these people use their faith as an excuse. It is very rare that someone is brainwashed to the point where they would actually commited these crimes in the name of their religion. Many might proclaim it as such but it is an excuse. More often it has to do with money and power (somethign that corrupts all humans regardless of backround) and religion is simply used to take the blame.

You are going to blame catholocism for your mom's ignoranc? I went to Catholic school, Sunday School, and Church for a good part of my life, and I know most of that crap. So her teachers didnt teach. Blah.

Agreed, there is plenty to learn if people werent so complacent.

Its just like every other Christian religion. Atleast Catholics didnt cut out parts of the bible and understand it well enough to know that Catholicism (if the bible is correct) is the Christian religion that makes sense.

<< About forms of Ateism - there isnt one out there that isnt stupid. Atheism is an atrocity waiting to happen.

And the Catholics have proven me right before. Forget History? :)

<< (In case anyone misunderstands, I would not say the above italicized statement. Its there to illustrate that blanket statements like that get us nowhere in terms of tolerance and understanding). >>

Im tired of tolerating closed minded religious people that try and shove their belief system down my throat (and I have met very few Christians that do not feel the need to say something about their cult every couple of minutes). I wish every one of them would leave me alone. My lack of faith is none of their business and my soul does not need saving.

And I consider atheism to pretty much be a religion unto itself.

Plus, most Christians have a hard time laughing about religion. If a Catholic cant laugh at the pope he shouldnt be alive. Period. If you cant laugh at yourself who can you laugh at?

notfred:

I have not insulted you, your mom, or her comprehension. I think its a combination of a poor school and a lack of a background (because of that) in teh Catholic faith. Your mom, and I'm not saying its her fault, clearly has a ver loose understanding of Catholicism. The church you attended may also have done a poor job (out of the 12 Catholic churches I can drive to, 3 actually stick to the faith and bother teaching it).

The Latin Mass was changed into the local languages in 1962 at the Vatican II council. Up to that point, Latin was the language of the Church to preserve the meaning of the words...

Imagine if the Mass had been translated into English in the 1600s. The whole thing would sound like a Shakespearian play: ""Forsooth, then unto the alter doth the trebbled glain of the twibbled hay..." ;)

In 1962 the Church found that modern translation capabilities and information storage allowed us to translate texts and liturgy while maintaining a constant watch on the meaning not getting changed.

<< And no one in here has said anything conflicting with the title of my thread. Sure, you've called me dumb, and you've called my mom dumb, but no one has insunuated that anything about Catholicism is intelligent. >>

Again - I've never called you or your mom dumb, and I have no intention of doing so. But you have issued a blanket condemnation of the Catholic relgion and as the Catholic faith is extreemly large, I'm not going to be able to address your concerns unless you offer something more specific than "Its dumb".

If you'd like to offer your reasons you feel it is dumb, then perhaps I can try to "insinuate" its intelligence.

Thanks. :)
