Hello
I am trying to install printer for local area network windows 98. I
downloaded the driver for lexmark 4039 16L. Then saved in the C drive
Then I clicked on AddPrinter. Then I clicked local area printer because the
printer is connected to computer. Then I try to click browse. It gives me options
A , c,.I try to click on c. It doesnot let me go on the lexmark drive. Then i leave
alone and hit next. It gives me message. "Please insert the disk labelled windows
98 second edition cd Rom. Kindly help me with the problem.
Regards
Shoakat

Install the downloaded drivers instead of hitting add printer.

Otherwise Windows 98 is asking for the disk because it is missing operating system files.

So.....insert the Windows 98 disk!!!! After you do that, copy the system files off the disk onto your hard drive so you don't have to do all that disk swapping the next time win 98 finds its missing files.

Evidently the driver thinks it requires updated system files to complete . These files are on the win98SE cd as .cab files . They can often be found on your hard drive also. The common location is c:\windows\options\cabs , but they can be anywhere. Search for *.cab to look for other directories where the system files may be or find the win98se cd , locate the directory with the .cab files and point the installer to the files

Duder you need to find a friend with some computer knowledge, read a for dummies book or take a class

You have been trying to get a win98 computer, network, and printer setup for over a month

Most of the time if your computer asks for the Windows 98 cd all you have to do
is insert the cd and browse to d:\win98 (that is if D: is your cdrom drive letter) and it
will pick up the cab files from there.

Here's a nice trick. Instead of always having to put the cd in, just copy the win98 folder
from the cd onto your hard drive. You can always go into the registry and change the
install path and make it read C:\win98 so it doesn't look for the cd but rather will pick
the files up from your hard drive.

That is true......if you have a buddy who is computer savvy hang around him (or her) and pick up
some tips. Most of this computer stuff is just taking what you have learned and building upon it
as you can learn new things and having someone around that knows what they are doing it a
great method of learning.
