i am a newbie to this forum.i have joined it cause i have a problem.i just bought a xfx ge force 6600 gt. the card runs fine for games like doom 3, half-life 2, far cry, etc. but for games like nfs underground, undreground 2, the game sometimes crashes. a blue screen appears .the message reads like this:"the display driver was unable to complete a drawing operation. the device driver got stuck in an infinite loop." i have updated the driver and installed nvidia forceware 71.89 but the problem persists.
My system configuration is: AMD Athlon 64 3000+, 256 mb ram, msi rs480 mobo, windows xp pro service pack 1. is this a hardware problem? may i fix it without contacting my vendor? i am asking this because for other games the card performs strongly? pls help!!! thanking u in advance for ur suggestions. i am waiting.

Why is sp2 not installed?

Are you overclocking?

256mb seems really low...

But to answer your question, no, it's probably not a hardware problem. Sounds like configuration or software issues to me.

thx 4 ur reply. I have installed service pack 2 but the damn problem persists. I am overclocking right now at 570/1.14. But before that the mentioned games crashed just like now. Should i increase the ram? Please advice.

Yeah i need 2 increase my RAM. But why should it crash? Some of my friends have similar system. Only difference is the card like ge force 4 or FX. But their systems are not crashing like mine. Please advice. Are u sure its not a hardware problem? That will be a big relief u know.

was the game install before you install teh GF6600GT, tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game and maybe clearing the registry as well. some games have a bad time adapting to new hardware, some save settings that were for your old card.

Have you tried patching the games? There are probably some patches available on EAs site to fix the problems that you're having.

And for the love of god man, get some more RAM in that computer, 256mb is NOT enough, espceially if you're running the processor and video card you are.

Thx for ur advice. My direct x is updated. And i have installed the games after the gt installation. So i think i should increase my system memory.Any more suggestions?

memory wouldnt cause that unless its really bad lol, but make it your next upgrade

your problem however is most likely video drivers, which ones are you using?

I have a related issue which wasn't fully resolved. I have 6600GT (gigabyte), with same cpu, and 512mb RAM. HL2 runs great, but for some reason, nfs underground 2 doesn't run very smooth, as well as mvp baseball 2005.
It seems that the crashing issues I had were resolved by patching the games, however, visually speaking, the performance sucks.
This fact is surprising, since a game like mvp baseball 2005 isn't very demanding on the gpu, and yet, the performance is VERY poor.
I read in some forums that other people with cards like this had exactly the same symptoms.
I have a feeling that EA products, tend to have problems with the 6600GT's, and possibly with some other nVidia cards. This is very unfortunate, since they make some nice games, but if they don't run well, I rather spend my $$$ on games that perform well.

Thx for ur replies. I am using forceware version 71.89 right now. And if Ea has problems with 6600 gt then its too bad. Actually Underground 2 didnt give that much a prob compared to underground 1. But as far as performance goes, when the game is running, it runs very well with all visual settings turned on.Any suggestions?

Yeah, it happened in multiple games. NFS U,NFS U2,PAINKILLER,MANHUNT. The same f***ing prob as i mentioned before. What do u suggest?

Is the rest of your system stable? I've seen other people report the same issue and it seems to affect both Nvidia and ATI cards. But that doesn't rule out the possiblity of a bad card.

Rest of the system is quiet stable. Right now playing FIFA 2005 and its running fine.If the card is a prob, dont u think it should affect all the games?

CtK, if he is on SP2 he has DX9C.🙂

I tried to get u info, i used to get that and loop error on my G 2 GTS Ultra (new at time) but i think it fixed later with drivers, i also posted to a thread similar to this with the loop error.

Ive seen both these errors and normally its driver related, i aint gonna say try diff drivers as you will have done this.
