i dont get what youre saying

You don't know what a repair install is?

Basically you boot from the CD just as if you were going to install a fresh copy of XP, tell it to install to the same drive, and it will ask you if you want to repair the current installation (once it finds it). This basically just replaces all the system files (and as such, you may have to upgrade to SP2 again, etc.)

it wont erase my other files, will it?

sorry, im just really cautious when it comes to this stuff, i had 3GB of info deleted when i did something similar on my laptop

luckily, most of it was backed up onto CD and the rest i just downloaded or installed again . . .

Just be careful, and don't let Setup proceed with anything before you're 100% sure what it's doing. :p

A repair install will leave everything intact (documents, even programs, etc.) - it just replaces system files with the ones on the CD.

Like I said, I'm pretty sure you go about it as if you're going to do just a normal Windows install onto the drive...at which point it'll scan and find an already existing Windows install, and it'll ask you if you want to repair it. (Hint: you do ;))

Setup cannot continue until the folder is created.

Never heard of that one before.

If it's not something simple like the drive is full or something...then I have no idea what to make of that, lol

is your drive NTFS formatted?

If it is I don't see another solution than trying to install windows on another partition, or another harddrive with the current unplugged to be 100% safe.

If it's FAT32 get a win98r2 bootdisc and copy the stuff to another partition

can you move the drive to another computer to get the data off? (not as the boot disc obviously)

i'll have to find a friend who has a computer that they can lend me for a while

if i buy another HDD, install that, put Windows XP on it, can i transfer the files that way?

yes, if you don't have some encryption one your NTFS drive, in which case it doesn't work to put it in another computer either. See the thread in OS if you have.

Then lending a computer, a fresh install on another partition or harddrive is the way to go AFAIK. Another harddrive with current unplugged is the safest way to ensure nothing goes wrong, but you can also install on another partition if you have one.

no, i only made one partition when i formatted the drive . . .

i guess i'll order a drive from Outpost.com in the morning, there are a few good rebates happening ($70 for 200GB) . . . use that, install XP, transfer all the files

then reformat this 250GB drive i have right now and make partitions . . . what do you think i should make the partitions as, just as to avoid this in the future . . .

i think i'll then sell the drive i buy tomorrow on FS/FT or something
