Ok here's the deal. I get my computer, notice it's running at around 50 degrees celcius under heavy load, order arctic silver 3 and a slk-800u to upgrade from my stock heatsink. So it comes in, I'm kinda in a rush, leaving for college in 2 days and all, so I attempt to do it myself just using the online guide thing (Im a total beginner at the inside of a computer). So as I am taking out my motherboard Im just kinda taking off all the plugs without a care, because I think I can remember. Then I take out my motherboard and take off the old heatsink and fan. I then screw the x-brace on the back, put some arctic silver on the heatsink and chip, and put those together with the fan on it. I then put the motherboard back into the case, but remember I didn't put in the temp. monitor between HS and processor, so I undo the sink and fan, put it in, and redo them.

So now, I have to plug everything back in. Most of the stuff I know, but there are a couple of things I don't remember where they go (mostly those fan controller wires). Anyways, I plug back in everything, try to turn it on, nothing. So I go to my mobo manual (Abit nf7-s 2.0) and read the order in the bottom right where the power/reset/led/speaker plugs are supposed to go. So then I plug it all back in, press the power button, it turns on, but then just sits with a blank screen and does 2 high beeps, 2 low beeps, 2 high beeps, etc. While this is happening I am watching the CPU temp, and it is climbing pretty rapidly from 28ish to 40, at 40, I panic and press the power button again and eventually it shuts down.

So my question is: Did I just screw something up irrepairably or did I just miss a plug? And whats up with my temperature doing that, any suggestions on how I might have installed wrong?

Please help, I really want to get this fixed before college.

Thanks,

Gigem

...did you remove the plastic film from the bottom of the heatsink?

yep, even scrubbed with a little rubbing alcohol for the stickiness

oh and I dont know if this is worth noting, but, I think because of that x-brace on the back of the mobo, my board won't screw into the mobo holder at the top right of the case. Probably nothing but it's just weird.

I hope you don't mean that you literally have a thermal sensor between the CPU's core and the heatsink's base :Q That would be a huge no-no. Alongside, maybe, as long as the sensor's not thicker than the CPU core, but NOT inbetween!

Also, what fan is being used here? Does it have RPM pickup?

you sure you installed that 'brace' right? maybe your motherboard is grounding

...try it outside the case. Like on a table. Just video, RAM, keyboard and PSU. Well, and CPU and HSF, 'cause the CPU will burn up pretty quickly w/o a HS.

That's what I was thinking :Q

The beep codes you describe mean: Repeating High/Low - CPU - Either the CPU is not seated properly or the CPU is damaged. May also be due to excess heat. Check the CPU fan or BIOS settings for proper fan speed.

No, I installed the CPU temp monitor to the right of it, it's not touching the CPU core directly. I guess I can try everything again, I can't even get to BIOS though, when I turn it on nothing will load at all.

As for the fan, if RPM pickup is the little plug thats to the left of the CPU, then yes, it has it, but it is just some generic 80X25mm fan

Ok well I re-did the whole thing, took the cpu temp gauge out, and turned it on. For about 10 seconds nothing happened, no beeps, nothing, then I tried to see if I could turn it off and it started giving a 1.5 second beep, 1.5 second pause, 1.5 second beep, etc. Anyone know what this means? I turned the power off when this happened, tried turning it back on and the beeps came again but this time immediately. Thanks for the help.

Check the seating of your memory modules, cards and cables, as well as the CPU itself.

If the thermal sensor is thicker than the CPU core, then when the heatsink tried to compress the cornerpads of the CPU, it would not be able to land flat on the CPU core due to the thermal sensor's presence. I'd steer clear of putting anything between the heatsink and any part of the CPU for this reason. If this did occur, it's possible that the CPU is dead (a friend of mine killed an AthlonXP 1700+ by persisting in trying to start the system over and over, with the heatsink not properly seated).

Regarding the fan, I meant, does the fan have an onboard tachometer. Some do, some don't, and some motherboards won't run without a tach signal from the CPU fan, to prevent damage in the event of a CPU-fan failure. Judging by the Abit NF7-S manual, your motherboard doesn't appear to be that type, however.
