I am looking for advice on a new server build. The server will be used for video encoding (occasionally) as well as a solution for backup (RAID w performance and backup). I am needing this as a File Server as well.I was thinking Raid 5 or 10, but open to suggestions (actually greatly appreciated). SAN? NAS? RAID?

RAID controller?

Case? that will hold enough drives for the 6-12TB

Portable Case? if SAN or NAS

The total number of users will be less than 20 at any given time.

We need somewhere between 6tb and 12tb of hdd space.

I know some Linux and Unix, but we mainly have PC's in our environment so a Microsoft OS seems the most logical way to go.

Memory...i was thinking at least 8 to 12 GB, but it all depends on the overall price.

Would you suggest a SAN or NAS. They asked for portability, but I am just looking for the best solution.

we will have Apple and PC's connecting to the server.

We will probably also throw a Blu-ray burner and combo DVD/CD burner in there.

I would also like to setup a FTP server and RDP on the box. I would like for this server to sync with our other server in a diff city.

Any suggestions? please help

Trying to stay between 2500 and 4000 for all of this to work.

Thank you

For a server you go with a major vendor, Dell or HP. Any low end box should be able ot handle this, give them a call.

I would keep the burning tasks on the workstation and just have the server doing its server functions as well.

well I asked about this, but they seemed like they wanted it built rather than through Dell. I asked and it didn't go so well.

Building your own server for business and production use is a very dumb idea. When it breaks and it will break you want to have someone to call to get it working/spare parts.
NEVER EVER build your own server for work.

ok...not an option. I need to check on what it takes to build one. If the Dell option comes into play, I will be more than happy to go that route ( as I would much rather go that way and even suggested it). They are wanting it built via Newegg or similar with extra parts (hdd's, etc) on hand, etc.

Sounds like the boss is a cheapass.

Just buy the cheapest shit and use the savings on a nice backup solution. Then when it fails, you get to say "I told you so." Then proceed directly to Dell, do not pass go, do not collect $200.

Funny thing is, is it wont be that much cheaper than a server you can buy from the Dell Outlet which WILL come with a warranty.
