I have the opportunity to pick between two different cable companies for internet service. The speeds seem comparable, but I am wondering what else I should look for to optimize for online gaming, etc. I have two computers to hook in through a router, so that both can play at the same time. Any advice? Thanks!

It seems a little hard to tell without knowing who the two providers are. :(

Since you can not perform tests without having the services your best bet is to find gamer in your neighborhood that can provide you with info about their experience with the providers.

WideOpenWest and Comcast. Is it as simple as up/down speed? Or is there anything relevant to the way that the provider is set up, as far as the ip addresses and how they handle them?

While upload/download speed is good, it doesn't determine how you'll perform while playing games. You have to look for a low ping. JackMDS is correct by suggesting that you check with other people who have the same providers. A good place to read reviews for ISPs in your area is DSLReports. Hope this helps.

I too would highly recommend asking around your neighborhood. Ask the gamers and then ask the techie types that network for a living.
