Please help with a "FTP Server" Setup

OK heres the deal. I setup G6 a FTP server software program on a NT_4.0 machine. I opened up a port on my netgear RT314 router so I could get through. The way i have it setup the router gave the NT machine a IP address of 192.168.0.4 port 21, so to FTP from my other machine here at home Im typing in my @home IP address. I have a static IP address assigned and have it setup in the router configuaration. But I cant get logged in with FTP. I can how ever get logged in if i type in the 192.168.0.4 to the FTP server from my machine. But thats no good for people trying to log into my FTP server from the internet.

What im i going wrong! I created a user account and it all seems like its setup right. I had a friend trying to connect but he said it couldnt even connect and try to accept the account I created for him. But if i myself try it seems to connect but wont accept my login name and password. I use to have this working months ago just goofing off. But I dont know if it made a differance but I was using DHCP from my @ home server. But theres a problem with @ home DHCP so I had to put in a static IP address.

I hope you guys understand what Im saying 🙂

Thanks!

I'm not completely familiar with the netgear router but 192.168.0 is an unroutable block to the internet. If you tell your friends to connect to 192.168.0.* they could only connect to it if its on their lan. You'd need some sort of packet forwarding I'd think if I'm understanding you right. Or a linux box 😉 🙂

I believe that you have to give your Netgear Unit the static IP that your ISP is giving you and allow for FTP from the setup menu within the Netgear unit.

I.E. - you have to allow for FTP with the static IP of your ISP, then it will allow you to get to your server for FTP.

I am not entirely familiar with your particular Netgear unit, but most of them setup similarly.

Soybomb, Im not telling my friends to connect to 192.168.0.*. Thats the IP the router is giving FTP server. Im just opening the 192.168.0.* so when the rech the router they will beable to get through it. The number im trying to come in on off the internet is a 24.24.234.* ect. Thats my @home static IP that im using that people should beable to connect to my router with. Then that number connects to the router and comes on through my lan. What Im saying is just for testing the FTP accounts, I could connect to the FTP server through my lan using the 192.168.0.*. But not with the static IP assigned in my router configuration. I know or think its right or it would let me out to the internet to type this. 🙂

Motorheader Im with you. But thats what im trying to do and its doesnt seem to work? Im stumped and its pissing me off! :|

Thanks guys! Anyone else?

So you are saying that you opened the 24 address on the Netgear unit for FTP, and if I was to ftp to the 24 address I wouldn't get the login. Can your friends ping or tracert to your IP?

Try getting the Netgear unit out of the loop, connect direct to your NT box, and see if that will allow someone outside of your "realm" to connect via FTP over ISP.
