This is my fault but today I decided on ridding my computer of a dual OS PC to simply WIN 2K. Previously I had WIN 2K on my E drive and Win 98 on my C Drive. They are both on the same hard disk but different partitions. So I stupidly formatted the C Drive which had my WIN 98 installed. Then I tried to reboot and the error given was NTLDR is missing, please reboot your system. This shows up just after my bios discovers all my peripherals and Windows is just about to boot up. So I figured that this was because when I had installed WIN 2K, I had specified to have a dual OS so this was probably what was screwing everything up. So I went to my Emergency Disk set to reinstall WIN 2K. I formatted the E Drive this time in which WIN 2K was previously installed and started installing. After copying all the files, when the system rebooted, the same error came up again... NTLDR is missing. Now I don't know what to do to go about solving this problem. I dont want to format the whole harddrive because I have backed up everything on my F Partition. What can I do? I think I need a way to get to a prompt so I can format the C and E drive and then re partition both of them together, and then try again but I don't know how I can format the partitions. My drive letter setup is as follows.
C: Partition which had WIN 98 which was formatted through WIN 2K 4 gigs
D: Different Hard Drive.. no partitions. Backup 5 gigs
E: Partition which had WIN 2K installed after WIN98 2 gigs
F: Partition which has all my backup. 15 gigs

What to do? I need to save partition F. Partitions C,E,F are on the same harddrive. How can I reinstall Windows. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

What you are having a problem with is the Master Boot Record... Run FDISK.EXE /mbr to erase the Master Boot Record, then install Win2k in the first partition. (If win2k sees something like a boot loader in the MBR, it won't install it's own boot loader there.) Now go ahead and install Win2k in the first partition. Hope this helps out.

(I usually use the hotmail.com addy, but anandtech.com won't let me use it to join... My other email is twisted365@fl.freei.net, but that email server sucks)

ps: To get FDISK.EXE to run on your comptuer, get a blank floppy, and find someone with a win98 machine. In explorer, right click on A: 3.5 Floppy and click format. Make sure and select "copy system files" and format the disk. (that makes the disk bootable.) Now search the hard drive for FDISK.EXE and copy it to the floppy. Use the floppy to boot your machine, and at the c: prompt, type fdisk.exe /mbr. That's it. now install win2k.
