please help: whats the best way to retreive data off a FUBARed HD?

Aharami

Lifer
I think my secondary HD - a 120 gig Maxtor just died last night. I have the HD partiotioned into 3 logical drives - storage, games, and music. I was trying to install this game demo last night into the games drives when in the middle of the installation, the HD started making a LOUD clicking noise, followed by a spinning/whining noise - repeat.

I immediately powered the comp down and upon restarting, problem started again.
It seems like everything is fine until something/anything tries to access that drive.

-On startup, everything is fine until after windows startup screen - then the HD starts making the noise again and desktop doesnt show up. (tried it with Maxtor drive not connected and windows starts up fine)
-Tried to boot up thru winxp cd, and was fine when examining my master HD, but as soon as it started to examine my Maxtor HD, noise started and seemed like system froze.

So worst case scenario...if my Maxtor is FUBARed....how can i get some of the data off my Storage and Music partitions? are there any tools that might aid me?

thanks a lot

Don't do this. That's moronic. It's also a VERY LAST RESORT. And rarely works.

EDIT: There are many utilities out there to help you. I'm too lazy right now to link them for you. On track makes a good one, and "get data back" does also.

You'lll probably need to do a good bit of digging on your own.

GetDataBack Data Recovery for NTFS

assuming you used NTFS.... if the drives to the point where its physically so jacked that it can't even stay in operation long enough to pull the data from it, im not sure if any other way to get data from it. but this will allow you to recover reguardless of corrupt partitions/mbr's/sector errors etc...

We use GetDataBack here as well. The drive has to physicall work though. I'd slave the drive to a working computer, then use some sort of data recovery software to see if it can access it. Or if it's really that important, contact OnTrack (www.ontrack.com I think). They do data recovery but you can expect to spend a grand or more...

:Shrugs

I've done it and so have some friends and had it work. If the HDD physically cannot work, what's the harm?

yea i used NTFS!
coworker also suggested seeing if the HD is under warranty. He suggested ship them the HD if it is and they can get most of the data out. I know maxtor has a 1 year limited warranty. I gotta check if i bought this HD more than 1 year ago (i dont think so)

you guys think that might be a smart option?

FWIW, did you have a 120GB Diamondmax 9+?

The one I had in my ReplayTV failed a week ago. I RMAed it and got a new one within a week.

Warranty is only the physical drive, not the data. Once you send the drive back to them for warranty replacement you get a different drive back.

i dunno if its a Diamondmax. I'd have to look at the box (yea i still have the box it came in). I do know its a 120 gig with 8mb buffer

when they RMAed it, did they bother extracting the data from your failed drive and putting it in your new HD?

The freezer trick is actually fairly valid. Too many people have had it work. Got a good scientific rationale for working, too (cold=shrinkage=be careful getting out of the pool=hard drive motors/head not grinding on platters).

runtimes get data back also has a fat32 version...but yeah, that would be the absolute best tool for recovering data IMHO. Its certainly saved my arse, and helped my own job stability several times over. As well as countless others I know.

The freezer trick has never worked for me but its definetly worth a try, be sure your system is cool too so you can keep the drive cooler longer. And if your music etc is worth over a grand, then you can send your drive to a data recovery place, they'll take a while and charge you an arm and a leg but it works.

What they do is take your drive apart in a clean room, and essentially "rebuild" it to extract the data off the platters. Hopefully you don't have too bad of a crash, and the read head hasn't scratched the fvck out of your platters.

good luck,

I lost a 250GB 2 weeks ago, then the motherboard died 🙁 luckily i was able to back it all up, and take care of the warranty, all I need to do now is clear off enough space to get my raid 5 array working proper.

They will not extract the data for you. They just take it and drop it in a junk pile for all I know.

My drive was in my replaytv so I didn't really have anything worth saving, unless you consider the Apprentice worth retrieving. The drive never gave any signs of problems. It still spins and runs the DFT tests but the tests indicate an error and to RMA it.

I would use restore 2000 software.. but if the drive starts for a while and then dies, then it could be heat issue..

run as a slave and try to copy little bit at a time until you get everything you need.

No software can help you, if the drive dies..

But as long as the drive spins, software can try to recover..

freezer trick worked for me, but that was for a physically malfunctioning hard drive. the fact that yours is clicking when you access it makes me think that might be the case for you as well. freezer trick is last resort, bc it probably will be totally dead when you are done (was for me). good luck!

I was just going to post the same thing, I've had the freezer trick work many times but it's been my experience that it only works once. You could try using ghost to copy the data to another drive using the force switch or sector by sector copying, I've also had good luck with that. Sometimes it takes a while to get past the damaged parts but once it does it usually works out alright.

Speed

I've used Spinrite 6.0 on more than one HDD and have always had great results, provided the drive still showed up in BIOS.

thanks for all the advice. this happened late last night and i didnt get much time to tinker with it. I wont find out more till I get back home tonight.

Games and Music arn't an issue. You paid for all thosegames and MP3's after all. if not, you shouldn't complain.

Data though. THAT SUCKS! I back all my data up to a second hard drive fairly frequently. I'm mostly concerned with my financial data as it's needed for taxesand I fear nthing more than Uncle Sam.

Exactly.

If the data is needed, you can send it to comapnies that specialize in things like this. They litterally rebuild the drive and clone it. Saving most if not all your data. Can cost up to thousands of dollars though. These are places that will try to recover data from fires though.

Are you kidding me? Try losing over 300 ripped CD's and save-game data from games like Neverwinter Nights and then tell me that it's useless.

It sucks, but the music can be replaced. Pain in the arse, but fixable.

Save game data sucks. not familiar with the game you mention, but you could probably get game save data from someone else and resume where you left off easily enough.

Tiem for a RAID set up 😉

EIDT: PS: Sorry for sounding like a dink. Just trying to let you know it's not the end of the world. Data is the only thing you really can't live without.

Try Knoppix? Worked for me in grabbing about 60% of the files off a physically near-death HD. New distrib out as of December 8 I want to say.
