Please help troubleshoot CD-ROM problem

Beginning yesterday, neither of my CD drives will recognize any CD (CD-ROM, audio, CD-RW) except right after the computer is re-booted. However, if I eject the CD and then re-insert it, it is not recognized - Dbl-clicking the drive letter in My Computer shows an empty drive. I have removed and re-installed each drive with no success. Device Manager says everything is fine. I have been using these drives in this computer for over 2 years with no problems. Now, when try to install a program I have to re-boot with the CD in the drive for it to recognize it (autoplay does not work for either) but when it asks to insert disk 2 it sees nothing. Any ideas?
