Alright this is a long story... I somehow got a virus on my brand new work notebook, at a job I started a week ago.

It was Infostealer.Gampass which I managed to remove. I have run the provided Symantec Anti virus, and it scans clean now. I have also removed the logs of the computer so it doesn't send a red flag to the server that I had a virus.

I thought everything was cool, but I must have some piece of malware, because every time I click on a link from the results of a Google search it takes me somewhere else completely un related. A lot times it's to buy some spyware remover etc.

How can I get rid of this with explaining to my boss that I have to get my notebook re-imaged on my 2nd week of work.

I was thinking downloaded some spyware remover, but I don't want to make things worse.

Thanks for your help!

You might also want to

1) run HijackThis and post a log

2) if you are allowed to do administrative tasks on the company's computer, then check it with Secunia's online vulnerability checkup at http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online/ and fix what it needs.

3) also upgrade the Automatic Updates software to the Microsoft Update engine instead of just the Windows Update engine, and make sure Automatic Updates is set to full auto.

Ok here is the log. After looking the 4b.tmp looks suspicious and seems to be malware. Just need to figure out how to get rid of it.

OK I removed the 4b.tmp files from the temp folder and deleted the registry key. But I still have the same issues. Either it's a different malware or it's still loaded.

Did you try a System Restore to before the attack, by the way? If not, that's a pretty low-risk move.

Anyway, I plunked your log into http://hijackthis.de/en for a quick-&-dirty analysis. There's some unknown items. I'm hesitant to tell you to nuke anything when it's your work computer, but this seem like it should be looked into:

O2 - BHO: XML module - {500BCA15-57A7-4eaf-8143-8C619470B13D} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msxml71.dll

Try uploading that file to Virustotal.com for an analysis.

Beyond that, here are some other ideas:

1) Start > Run > netsh winsock reset, reboot and see if you're still affected

2) Run Superantispyware and see if it finds stuff

3) You could create a bootable antivirus scanning CD, boot the computer from the CD, and have it run a "second opinion" virus scan. Here's one, if you can burn a .ISO to CD: http://www.f-secure.com/linux-...escue-cd-300-released/ Give the lappie a wired connection so it can fetch fresh antivirus definitions before it launches the scan from the CD.

BTW later on I'm going to scoot this over to the Security forum, so if you don't see it here, it's over in Security

OK I think you were right on the XML modules.

I did download Superantispyware and ran it. It seem to get everything fixed up. I have to admit I was rather skeptical of a Free program to fix it but I'm pretty sure it's done the job.

Anyway I think I'm fixed up, thanks for the advice all!
