I am the administrator of our very small NT network here at work, and up until today, nobody has ever had a need to dial into the Network via RAS. The person needs access to files that are on the network from their Win98 PC at home. I have never set something like this up, so I don?t know all that I should to set something like this up.

1. Once I enable RAS in their account and they then dial in to the network, then what does the person at home do to access their files?? Do they have to map a network drive or folder on the server? Will the network drives appear in the ?My Computer? icon in Win 98 desktop on the remote PC?

2. Would using software be any easier than the above, such as ?PC Anywhere.? If I used software like this, do I have to install it only on the client PC or the server, or both? If I install this on the client, how do I use the PC Anywhere to access the files on the network?

Thanks a lot and if you could please walk me thorough, step-by-step of what I have to do I would really appreciate it.

They access their files as usual if you give them the rights to do so.

Do they have to map a network drive or folder on the server?

No.

Will the network drives appear in the ?My Computer? icon in Win 98 desktop on the remote PC??[/i]

Yes, if their network are mapped.

2. Would using software be any easier than the above, such as ?PC Anywhere.?

It is not much problem using or setup neither way.

If I used software like this, do I have to install it only on the client PC or the server, or both?

Have to install software on both computers (host = workstation at work, client = home computer).

If I install this on the client, how do I use the PC Anywhere to access the files on the network?

Just as user have done when at the workstation desktop (but you have transfer files between client & host via the file transfer interface if you chose to do so).

PC anywhere would let you setup the Host computer as server/working desktop, and the Client computer as a dumb terminal kind of like a thin client/server setup. Dumb terminal?Client computer send key stroke/command to Host computer where all work is done.

You might want to investigate in VPN, which could be a more viable solution. And, also look into Remote Administrator 2.0 if you are looking into remote software.
