i built my computer 2 months ago,

its a xp1900+ amd processor on a ECS board. i am running 4 LED FANS, a vantec fan controller, dvd, cdrw, 2 hd, volcano 7+ heatsink. the psu is 400w powmax. recently, my computer freezes because the hd skips. when it happens, the light in all the LED fans dims. so i am not sure if it's a psu problem or hd problem. i dont think it's a psu problem because its been fine. any inputs?

The only thing that would cause the leds to dim would be drop in voltage. In other words your PS is failing.

dont like the fact that your using an ecs board. been known to have poor quality. I know i have one in wich i had to spend a ton of money and time to get the thing working right 😉
but enough of that as i am straying 😉
A couple of options
1) check voltages to see how much they flunctuate in your bios or in a utill that will allow you to read those before your comp freezes up.
2) try using a different hard drive temporarily if you have any old extra drives lying around the house.

thanks for all the inputs. the machine is not overclocked. can psu's just fail temporarily like that? when it freezes up, all the lights are still on, the comp is just frozen

I'd disconnect all/most of those fans and see how your system runs. Saying that a PS is '400w' really doesn't help very much. Each individual voltage +3.3v, +5v, +12v etc has its limit of the current that can be provided. Could be that when the HD 'skips' it puts a higher load on say the 12v supply, which is within limits but because of all your fans it spikes the PS.

any other recommendations? my case temperature is in the 40s all the time. and because my psu only has 4 plugs, i had to use a bunch of adapters. and also, i am using the vantec fan controller. so the wires are really messed up. and the weird thing is that the main problem hasnt happened in a day or two. so i just want to get more opinions before i do anything. thanks.

If you're still worried about you HD, maybe you can get a diagnostic proggy from the manufacturer's website? Good Luck
