Please help! Problem with clean install of Win ME.

I am having trouble installing Windows ME.

I have formatted the hard drive without incident. I insert my Win ME CD and setup starts. Then the troubles begin...

I have tried this about 6 times and each time the problems start at different stages of the installation.

Either the setup hangs and I have to turn the PC off, or I get an error something like this:

SUWIN caused a General Protection Fault in module KRNL386.exe at 0001:7D8F

The last attempt failed at 55% installation.

I have also tried to install Win 98, Win 2000 and Win XP. No luck either.

I have run scan disk, with a surface scan, and the hard drive seems to be ok.

The CD-ROM is new, the memory is new, as are the motherboard and CPU.

ABit KT7A
Duron 850
Samsung CD-ROM
Seagate 4GB HDD (Single partion. Have another Seagate 30GB I was going to install later.)

I have tried both hard drives on their own - no help. I have tried a different gfx card - no help. I have tried a different CD Reader - no help.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

did you use fdisk to partition & make an active partition before formatting?

The first thing to do is go into your BIOS settings and load all default settings. Then in BIOS disable virus protection.
Turn your machine off and remove all cards except the video card. This means no sound card or modem. If you have built in sound it shouldn't cause any problems for you, no need to disable that.
Run fdisk again and delete all partitions and restart the machine so it sees that there are no partitions. Then using fdisk, create the primary partition and restart the machine so it sees that there is no formatted drives. Then run the ME CD and let it format the drive for you. If you have a file on your CD named "oemsetup.exe" run that instead of the normal setup.
I've had to install ME several times and this way took a bit longer but worked the best for me.
😀

Oh, sorry. To continue...
After you're up and running you can turn off your machine and install the sound card and modem. The system should find those with no surprises. Might even be a good idea to do this one at a time just in case. 🙂

Already have bios at 'fail-safe' settings, have virus disabled and only have memory and gfx card installed. But I haven't done the FDISK/FORMAT like you suggest, so I will try that! But it'll have to wait until tomorrow, as I am in work all night 🙁

Thanks! Wish me luck!
