Hi,

I'm a newbie here. I had been searching through the forum for over 4 days and am a bit confused. I'm not able to reach a conclusion as of what to buy.

I'm under real fix to select between an Intel pentium D 805 and an athlon64 3000+ . Since my budget doesnt allow to buy any costlier procci, i kindly ask you to help to choose one out of these.

I aint a hardcore gamer. I casually play games, surf the net, install a lot of applications (no high end apps, just anti viri, internet apps) and loads of music and movies. Please suggest me a suitable procci.

Moreover i heard a64 3000 venice has been discontinued?? Is this true? should i still go for it then?

Thanks.

If you at all think you will be multitasking a bit then just get the bargain dual core from Intel.....The 3000+ will be worlds faster then it in gaming and other single threaded apps, but it should be able to be faster in some encoding apps that are multithreaded....multitasking will be an easy win for the 805....

It is a heck of a bargain to get in on the low end of dual cores....Not a power user then even 3000+ is a bit overkill for average uses you list....Gaming will likley be a dog unless you get a better gaming card and then hopefully you wont be too cpu limited....Some other gamers may know more about this and should comment on it...

So would i be able to play all recent games at decent performance in intel pentium d... I know amd rocks for game but what about pentium d?

So coming back to the question, will i have to go for amd or pentium?

I don know if my usage really falls under multitasking... I do not use high end apps or image editiors or so on.... I'm a average pc user who does everything with a pc including occasional games.

Don you think i can play games with decent graphics with onboard graphics on mobo

I am not sure...I think at 1.66ghz and 533fsb it will suck at games...especially since a P-D 840 couldn't beat a 3000+ some of the time....

Perhaps you dont multi enough....If you are even questioning it then just get a sckt 939 with 3000+ and you will be able to play the best games...vid card dependent ofcourse...dont skimp there...

i work at an internet security software company. a um big one.

if you even run antivirus, and the internet, and say a firewall the dual core makes a pretty decent difference in the "feel" of your comptuer.

i personalyl have an 820. and yes maybe that makes me a bit biased, but i had a 3000+ before too (actually i had both at teh same time, but my athlon's board shorted out).

anyhow, for games i mean if you are really into like FPSes i think you should get the 3000+.

if you play somethingl ike World of warcraft you probably should just get the 805. you can even get 820s on ebay for like $140 + shipping.

lastly seeing asy ou are asking the question of playing games on onboard graphics i'd assume you do not realyl game. i mean if you play like the sims, and say random flash games, uh just get the 805.

dual coer is really good too if i dunno yuo run vmware. but well i dotn think you run that.

Well i want to play games such as CS, HL2, Battle field with onboard graphic card. I'm looking to buy
ASUS A8N-VM CSM (GeForce 6150) or MSI K8NGM2 FID . Would this be good?

If i opt for dual core, which mobo should i buy? I need a cheaper one with onboard graphics and good audio

Will athlon be good enough for VISTA?

I think that with the liost of games that you have there, you will best off getting a seperate graphics card regardless of the chip you choose.

I know that XFX is running a crazy deal right now on a 6800 something (i cant keep track of all the differnt suffixes on these card) for $100 after rebate.

As others have said... if you game, get the 3000+ if you multitask more, get the dualcore. Both will suck with the onboard video when it comes to games, the AMD will just suck slightly less. If you are deadset on getting the onboard, get the GeForce 6150 since it does perform better than the ATI chipset.... and both of those are just hands down better than intel onboard.

If you are going to game at all, especially the games you listed, you will be most benefited by getting a seperate card and not using the onboard at all. So whatever chip you choose, get a graphics card.

Also, what is your budget in all this? For around $1000 you can get yourself a pretty decent machine that will play most games on high, but the absolute newest ones it will strain on.

How much is the 3000+? You could get an Opteron 144 from Monarchcomputer for $130....I don't know if they still have the deal though...
