my setup :
athlon xp 1600+ agoia stepping from newegg
abit kr7a mobo
thermaltake volcano 6cu, the slower fan
nanya 256mb pc2100 ddr
wd 80jb
enermax 350 ps
lian li pc-60 with 3 case fans (2 intake, 1 exhaust)
geforce 2 mx

i heard about everyone getting crazy overclocks with the 1600xp so i bought one from newegg and i can only get the fsb up to 144mhz stable. when i get to 145 i get a error after os loads.
i don't know about my memory settings and the voltage is default. please give me any advice and help. i am willing to buy a new hsf and maybe new ram to get the most performance out of this. i don't have that much experience in overclocking except old celerons and a athlon 1.3 ghz to 1.5. please help!
thanks

What are your temps like? If that board has a 5:2:1 divider that kicks in at 166MHz, then you might be able to up the vcore a notch and boot upa t 166FSB.

My roommate had some Mushkin with Nanya chips and it had errors at 133Mhz with fast ram settings. Sent it back and Mushkin sent some ram with MUSHKIN chips on it?? The are 7ns but I don't know who made them?

my system temps are around 31 F
and cpu temps are around 51 F
this board doesn't have a 5:2:1 divider 🙁
if it is my ram, what ram do you all suggest in getting for good overclocks?
thanks for the help!

Oh there a few to suggest. Corsair, crucial, samsung. Basically anything with micron or Samsung chips on it seems to be pretty good. Also a good bet is ram with a heat spreader on it already.

Also think RAM is the problem. Try relaxing all the timings (set latencies at highest values) and try to increase fsb. Now is not a good time to buy a new stick; I'd hold out with the PC2100 for a couple months and try to get a Samsung true 400MHz stick down the road.

Micron keeps its prime chips for use on their own 'Crucial' brand, and I think Samsung probably uses it's own prime stock for its own product. I have picked up and read the Samsung name on the chipsets on PNY, both OZC and Corsair are using Samsung and adding a non-fubctional (basically) heat spreader so you don't even see the name brand of the memory chip. All are selling their 'clones' for $ 30 - 50 higher for providing 'Eye-Candy'.
Why not get the gauranteed forever 'Genuine' Samsung in the first place. The clones don't beat the Samsungs - how can they - they're Samsungs too.
Oh, I use Crucial - the ONLY American made memory, thanks Boise !
