My girlfriend's computer is actually my old Gateway "Performance 450" from 3 years ago. About 4 months ago she started having issues with her sound. It would just intermittently stop working altogether. After a reboot, things were back to normal.

About a month ago, I decided to install a new HD for her, and with it I put WindowsXP. Thought this would probably solve her problems. EEEEHHHH wrong. Still intermittent.

2 weeks ago, sound cuts out completely. Nothing. I figure it has to be a problem with the on board audio. I purchased a Aopen Cobra AW-850 to drop in there until I could find the money to get her a nice new motherboard.

Well, its in there now, and I still can't get any sound. Before I installed it I removed all audio drivers, and I disabled the onboard audio in the bios. I have tried 3 revisions of drivers, the ones on the CD, the newest ones from Aopen, and the ones that windows update provided.

The computer does not register any errors, the speaker cable has been plugged into all of the "holes" in the back of the card, and all of the connections have been checked over. Anyone have any clue what it could be? Everything else on the computer appears to work fine.

Thanks!

Is there a jumper on the motherboard that you might have to move to disable onboard sound?

Jeez, was all that upgrading really worth it on a 3 year old machine?

My girlfriend says, "back off! I'm poor and in college" :D

I like the jumper idea, i'll give it a try, even though there is an option in the bios.
