Hi,

I want to network four computers so they can access a cable modem.

Will this work?

http://www.linksys.com/Products/product.asp?grid=23&prid=20

It's the router with a 4-port switch.
Now my problem is, I've heard that using the fourth port and WAN port
at the same time won't work. Is this true? I do believe that for hubs, using the
port closest to the uplink while using the uplink doesn't work.

Please, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Not an expert, so grain of salt, the 4 ports can be used with the wan port, but not with the UPLINK port.
If you use the uplink port, you cant use port 1 at the same time. Uplink ports are used to connect your router to a hub or another router, not to your cable/dsl modem. You connect your cable/dsl modem to the WAN port. It's not shared with any other port.
The UPLINK port is shared, though, with port 1.
Hope this helps.

yeah, that'll work

WAN port is not counted as one of the 4 LAN ports.

Plug broadband into WAN port and all 4 comps into LAN ports and away you go!

Thanks you two! The computer "expert" at the store had me buying an 8-port for 4 computers!

This will save me quite a bit of cash.

Thanks again.
