I've been trying to help a relative fix a problem with connection to the internet via dialup. I'm not sure if this is the right place, but a modem is hardware(unless it's a softmodem
).
Anyway, the internet just stopped working. The modem will dial the isp, but never will connect, it eventually times out and says there might be a problem with the isp, but they(isp) say they don't have a problem. The phone line works, I can connect to my dial up account from the same phone jack(but on my computer, her computer will not connect to my isp either). I'm guessing it's a modem issue. I tried installing newer drivers, but that made the modem not work at all, so I reinstalled off the mfg cd, and now it's back to where it was before, dial but no connection.
Right before this happened there was an electrical storm, and she has no phone line surge protection, so it could have been hit, but it still dials. Can a modem be "dead" but still dial? It's a lucent lt modem if you wondered. I also installed msdun1.3(it's a win 95b system), and that also didn't help. I tried a new modem, but I only had a soft modem to try, but it needs mmx cpu and win 98, so it didn't work. The modem queries fine from windows. Any help from you internet experts?
