I bought a laptop for my wife. so i need to set up a router to share internet connection.
I really have no idea about a router. never had it before. I tried to understand how to install DD-WRT from various links here but couldn't figure it out. the model of router is Asus 520gu. can someone please tell me how to do it step by step?
I'll really appreciate it.

See the DD-WRT Wiki for their instructions on how to flash the firmware. I did this a few weeks back and it's really very simple as long as you use a wired connection to do the flash update.

Download the Asus 520GU ddwrt firmware from the site (.trx file) and use the included Asus firmware restoration tool app to do the firmware upgrade, that's all it takes. Afterward, login to the admin page and at the very least, change the admin password and setup WPA/WPA2 on the wireless.

I am off tomorrow and plan to do it.
the website is a lot better to understand or follow it. 🙂
but I still have 2 questions.
1. do I need to do anything on my desktop which will be wired to the router? or simply plug into it and do nothing?
2. for my wife's laptop, which one do I need to download from the link?
http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2...dcom%2FAsus%2FWL520GU/
dd-wrt.v24_mini_asus.trx?

thanks a lot.

Install the asus cd that came with the router on your desktop. From the link you gave, download the mini_asus.trx file. Load up the asus firmware restoration tool on your desktop (has to be hard wired or could fail) and then navigate to the mini_asus.trx file. Click button to load that firmware. Once complete, login to the web based admin page and set it up for your needs (at the min change admin password & setup WPA2 encryption on wireless). After this, on yoru wife's laptop, just fine the wireless and type in the encryption key you set on the router, all done.

how do u Reset the WL-520GU to its defaults?
I tried to follow the instruction from the link. but the power light never blinked when I unpluged it and pluged in it. the linght is solid. what am I missing here?

First Read the Router's manual familiar yourself with the terms and how toset it up with the Asus default firmware.

When every thing is working well make a decision if you need the DD-WRT features.

If you do, then follow the instructions given in the various pages og the DD-WRT wiki site.

BTW, while in General DD-WRT makes a Router perform better and adds some features, in some cases DD-WRT does not necessarily makes the Router work better, it just adds features.

The Asus Router is a good Router DD-WRT just adds features, if you do not need the features, there is No need to flash with DD-WRT.

hmm I looked at Asus utility and clicked 'Device Discover'. it poped up a window showing
Device: WL502gu, SSID: default, IP Address: 192.168.1.1, Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0.

does this mean the router is at defalut setting?

Correct, that's the default setting. Instead of the device discovery tool, use the firmware restoration tool and upgrade it to the asus_micro.trx

thanks everyone! special thanks to kevnich2!!!
finished it and it wasn't that hard. 🙂
my final question is how I can make this connection secured?
because vista shows that this dd-wrt network is unsecured while I set up my wife's network. it does not even ask any password while I set up my wife's network.
I just chose dd-wrt unsecured connection.
