Please help me remove static.egwn.net spyware

Hey Guys,

Last few weeks my pc is infected by this crappy spyware...have tried:

Adware
Ccleaner
Spybot
Spyware Blaster
Spy Sweeper
Spyware Doctor

Ran avg antivirus on it also.............anyone has any ideas or has dealt with it before. Pop-ups are starting to get on my nerves

I tried hijackthis and removing it but could not find it. I switched from using IE to Firefox and that seemed to have solved my issue. Damm IE sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Try doing a system restore from at least 2 weeks ago.

Thank but I had the system restore turned off so that I can delete the entries....was recommended by spyware removal programs. Thanks

Now it is working fine since I am using firefox as an Internet browser.

FireFox doesn't remove malware, last I checked. If you start Internet Explorer and the problem is still there, then guess what... you haven't really cured anything, just hidden the symptoms. Post a HJT log if you want some help with it.

I plunked it into http://hijackthis.de and it was not sure what to make of several things there. Mailskinner, ding.exe, and O16 - DPF: {3C648A72-C49A-48EF-9F90-68EF13293F97} (Cacher Class) - http://xmlsweb.socalmls.com/XMLSearch/XMLCache.CAB. Do you recognize any of those?

Ding is through southwest airlines........I will try again to see if I get pop ups when opening with IE.

2) after running BlackLight and before rebooting, set up to run this manual scanner: instructions how to use it and LMK if you have problems. Sometimes people can't get the scan.bat to download, so try right-clicking this link and Save Target As if necessary.


The scanning utility is thorough, but that means it can be slow. Might be a good overnight project. Make sure to use Safe Mode With Command Prompt like it says, this is key. You can speed up the scanner by minimizing its window so it doesn't have to display what it's doing.

After the scanner's done, you can hit CTRL ALT DEL to bring up Task Manager, then go to the Applications tab, click the New Task button, and start explorer.exe. That gives you the Start menu, so you can stay in Safe Mode and run scans with Webroot and whatever else you got.

The scanning utility is thorough, but that means it can be slow. Might be a good overnight project. Make sure to use Safe Mode With Command Prompt like it says, this is key. You can speed up the scanner by minimizing its window so it doesn't have to display what it's doing.

After the scanner's done, you can hit CTRL ALT DEL to bring up Task Manager, then go to the Applications tab, click the New Task button, and start explorer.exe. That gives you the Start menu, so you can stay in Safe Mode and run scans with Webroot and whatever else you got.

Give this procedure a try:

1) run F-Secure's Blacklight rootkit detector and use the Rename option on files that it discovers are rootkits (if any). http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight

2) after running BlackLight and before rebooting, set up to run this manual scanner: instructions how to use it and LMK if you have problems. Sometimes people can't get the scan.bat to download, so try right-clicking this link and Save Target As if necessary.
