Please help me get my OC stable..

Mobo is a DFI SLI-D, have had this CPU boot into windows@2.8 before but I dont ask for that nor do I need it.. I would like to get 2.5 stable and it is most of the time.

I'm running the settings you'd expect-
4x HTT
250FSB
RAM 1:1
Auto timings (though I did set 2.5CL), seems more stable if I leave it at auto..
Tried stock-1.6vcore, none of which make it stable

My ram is DDR500 so I'm running it at its rated speed. Chip is a venice. Sometimes I'll be gaming and the USB will just die.. or in Warcraft 3 the game will just exit.. no error message or anything. Just dies.
This doesnt happen at stock speeds.

Do I need to pump up the mem voltage or chipset voltage with this OC?

I havent done prime95, my testing is done while gaming

i bumped up the ram voltage .2 and it seems much better, but im not sure..

ramv was my main suspicion but was reluctant to try bumping it up due to it being ddr500 ram to begin with

are the issues ive seen typical of needing more ram voltage?
the usb thing weirded me out and didnt make sense to me. the crashing of WC3 on battle.net (me hosting) was strange due to not crashing XP.. just crashing the game with no error whatsoever..

im not even sure if i need 1.55vcore to run this @2.5 since it seems stable now.

its very stable at stock voltage at 2.5ghz typically and as stated ive had this cpu booting into windows @2.85ghz.. its an old venice, not one of the very first weeks but an early one

seeing all these cpu benchmarks like oblivion made me to not want to run this at stock!

dont care about 2.8ghz or 2.6/2.7.. will be happy with 2.5 and running everything 1:1@ddr500
my ram is certified to run up to 3.1v according to the manufacturer

if you wanna see how your cpu will OC id say set RAM on a devider and test, test test!!!

i hate testing though.. i might someday when i get more time, if i can get 2.5 stable now i'd love it..

i did a year or so ago when i first got the cpu did hit 2.85ghz but never tried to see what it would take to get it stable.. im guessing 2.8 would not be possible to get stable or take a ton of voltage over 1.6v.. not sure

When i fist got my venice I could run up to 2.7 rock stable in prime. However, after a reformat I couldnt get it to go over 2.5. Now, just to pass prime I have to set it at 2.25 . Seems like venice deteriorates over time, go figure. Probably doesnt help much, just letting u know your not the only one.

What are the stock timings on your RAM?

You don't have the GSKILL 2 gig kit by any chance do you?

If it's the HZ, those sticks will not do less than 3 cas stable.

Also, if it's that GSKILL (or some other 2 gig UCCC chip kit), don't put more than 2.7 volts on it, or you will almost surely get lots of errors.

A processor doesn't deterioriate in the sense that you use it as time passes by...

7-4-4 is the timings but the DFI bios has so many mem timing options I dont know which is what!

I'm running 2.5CAS.. the rest on auto in the bios
never could figure out what the act to precharge setting was within the dfi bios (7)
ras->cas (4) is TRCD and ras precharge (4) is TRP but i dont bother setting those without knowing which is the act to precharge.

its still going prime stable since i last posted.. passed the 1024k tests, 8k tests, 10k tests and is now on the next one.

i'd be enthused if this cpu is indeed stable @2.5 on stock vcore.. apparantly my ram has been giving me more problems than anything and needed a bit more voltage @500mhz

now that i think about it, i believe ive had this cpu @2.6 stable on stock vcore for long periods of time.. same issues ive had with it at 2.5 recently (dropping games, usb failing ect)

i would not be surprised if this cpu was rock solid at 2.5ghz on stock.. i know i dont have one of those magic venice chips that did 2.9ghz or 3.. but still not bad

On my old crappy Asus A8N SLI board I achieved these results on this cpu-
Default volts - 2.6ghz
1.55vcore- 2.6
1.67vcore- 2.8
1.72vcore- 2.85
these were all stable in XP, but no prime95 testing was done (just booted in, fired up CSS and used the PC for a day)

Any thoughts on my OC and setup, suggestions?

CPUs are very weird indeed. My roommate's 3000+ was overclocked to 2.7 stable on corsair value ram. He buys some Crucial DDR500s ram and couldnt get past 2.4. Then one day, magically, he starts fiddling around with the settings and was able to get 2.6 Stable.

OP have you tried lowering your ram dividers? do that and Set your timings to 2t and try again. It takes alot of fiddling to get these OCs right. Also: is it stable 2.4???

ITS FINALS WEEK AT THE UNIVERSITY BUTTWIPE.
Theres nothing wrong with asking why the USB would fail or how to get it more stable.
BTW did you read the rest of the thread and notice that I HAVE done some testing?

I dont have time right now to sit down for a few days and do extensive testing/prime95 runs. Maybe when you have things going on and need a stable computer, you will understand. I didnt even ASK for helping getting a higher overclock, I asked how to get my current OC more stable!

In OTHER news not concerning the jack***...

It came out stable at default vcore@2.5ghz in Prime95 blend torture test after 9hours 15 minutes (no errors, no warnings).. is that good enough/decent for stability?

So I guess I have a couple questions,
Is what I did good enough/decent testing for stability?
How do I make sure that PCIlock is on?
My ram is 7-4-4 (or 4-4-7).. what 3 of the dozens of DFI options do these each apply too? As of now I have CAS2.5 and dram interleave enabled (supposedly off it kills performance). Or will auto settings have this set properly thru the SPD?

So your computer is prime95 stable 9hrs, but your still crashing in games? How frequently are the crashes?(5=10 min within starting the game or 1hr+) Have you tried memtest? Have you tried my suggestions above?

I would actually have done 12 hr+ but 9 hrs is fine I guess.


As for your ram questions:

CAS Latency Control(tCL) 1st number
RAS# to CAS# Delay(tRCD) 2nd
Row Precharge Timing(tRP) 3rd
Min RAS# Active Timing(tRAS) 4th
etc...

Auto settings dont always pick the best number. Its best if setttings are manually applied.

Im no longer crashing in games.. I should have been more clear.
Only 1 more final to go and I'm done with this semester.. woot!

Im going to go for 2.8ghz though Im not sure my PSU can support that. When I am trying to get that stable I'll prob start a new thread on that.

u should check pci bus speed .. looks something like 33.33/66.66

make sure its set at that

Are you still trying to run CPU 1:1 with RAM with 2.5 CAS?

Even my ram can't run that fast with such a fast timing (and I got some pretty fast ram, the infineon one's). Loosen up the timins to 3-3-3-7 or even looser (would help to know what kind of ram you have), and I wouldn't put more then 2.9v through the ram unless actively cooled and depending on the IC's (as in I need to know what kind of RAM it is), even increasing the voltage wouldn't really help (like my infineon's, increase the voltage all you like, I still don't get a higher OC)
