I followed the quick set up for my 4 port linksys router, connecting it to my external ethernet modem (alcatel speed touch home.) I enabled pppoe and everything worked fine. then I changed the name of my home network and it didn't work anymore. I started over again and still nothing. when I open explorer and type in an address name it doesn't go anywhere. The router says that I am connected and tells me my ip address, but it just times out. However, when I enter the actual ip address of a site it connects. What should I do? Thanks.

If you can get to a website by the IP but not the name, check if you have the correct nameservers in your setup. That's the most likely culprit. Also, you said you changed the name of your network, was this done in the router or on the computers? Did you change the workgroup name? If you changed it in your router then you probably changed your username so you can't log on anymore. If you changed it on you computers, you shouldn't have this problem.

where in the router setup can I enter the dns info? The only spot to enter it is connected to the bullet where you enter your static ip address (if you have one.) I don't (i'm dynamic) so there's nowhere for me to enter this info. Yes I changed the workgroup name on the computer and I am able to connect. just can't surf by domain name.

Oh, I see, the dns info is just for the static ip connections. That's strange. Did you change the workgroup name in the router? Because you shouldn't have. The first line is the router name which is your username the dsl people gave you. Changing the workgroup name on your computers wouldn't do anything. Any other changes?

right now the "router name" field is blank...my username and password are entered in the pppoe section. for the "domain name" field I have bellsouth.net entered. Do I need to have my username in the "router name" field too? It does seem strange that there's no other place to enter my dns info. How does the router know without me telling it?

You didn't say if you were using win9x or windows 2000.

If you are using win9x or winMe, type in the "run" box "winipcfg" then select your network adapter. See if you have all the proper information is there, especialy the DNS nameserver info.

If you are using win2k, type in "ipconfig /all" at the command prompt (dos prompt) it should have the same info. You might want to try a "ipconfig /release" then an "ipconfig /renew".

For win9x me, you can just hit "release all" then hit "renew all"

Broadway Blue,

Even though you are "dynamic" through PPOE the DNS servers of Bell South are not. You checked "Obtain and IP Adress Automatically" but a little further down the screen you see spots for up to 3 DNS servers, 1, 2, 3. You need to enter those values.

I'm assuming that you are using the router as an DHCP server for the machines on LAN side, this is where they will acquire the DNS infornation from.

Thanks guys! I entered in the dns info and everything works now. How could I miss "required"? Anyway, thanks again!
