Source of the problem: I had to change my 3com NIC card PCI slot, temporarily. Well, big mistake....
Windows 98 made some ***changes***.
Okay, now everything hardware-wise is back exactly as it was before. Exactly!!
Computer: PII 350.
'Device Manager' shows the NIC to be installed just fine, and working properly. 'Network' shows the NIC as properly installed and set up.
BUT, my Internet connection is no longer working on this computer. (I can still use **another** computer, networked and using the same DSL connection, right beside the troubled one, and it works perfectly as it always has --- I'm writing to you from this second computer. Thank God for this second computer!!!)
I have DSL service.
Seems some slight mismatch of something is occurring, even though everything hardware-wise is exactly back as it was originally.
My ISP technician, Qwest, took me through some steps. Found that everything **should** be working properly.
'Ping' works from DOS prompt. For instance, www.Yahoo.com pings just fine.
Main problem: Attempting to use a web browser brings up the following....
"Detecting proxy settings...." "The page cannot be displayed...." Every page gives this same result. Both Internet Explorer and Netscape do the same thing.
Networking between the two computers works just fine. I can open from Network Neighborhood both computers on either machine. I can transfer files back and forth between machines.
No other Internet program works either. Even a 'clock updater' that goes out and checks for the current time over the Internet can't get out.
It's as if Windows 98 is just not 'getting it.'
I've tried everything I can think of. I've reinstalled Windows (**over** the existing installation). I've uninstalled the NIC, and reinstalled it (about ten times). I've switched slot positions, and re-switched. I've taken out all the cards, brought up Windows clean, and re-inserted all the cards, having Windows find them all over again. I've cleaned out the System Device Manager of nearly all its components, and allowed Windows to rebuild the whole damn thing.
End result: Everything works just fine, except NO INTERNET CONNECTION with this one damn computer any longer.
PLEASE, folks, tell me what I **haven't** done, that will correct this f#ck-up. My hunch is that the solution is probably a really simple one. At least that's what I'm hoping.
Please advise.
Thanks,
Nicholas
