Okay guys, this is the problem I am facing. From time to time, I get a lag while I'm surfing the web or doing any desktop work. For Example, I am surfing the web, and then I try to close the window by pressing the "X" but it doesn't close. Meanwhile I can move my mouse, therefore I move the mouse to the start button and click; nothing. I move away and click away. Seconds later, windows plays this catch up game where everything I did while the period it was "frozen" is caught up.

I know this is not a windows problem because I have installed 2 different kinds of windows XP on my PC, yet I still have the same problem.

This does not occur in any games that I play such as WC3.

My Rig The P4 1800 is the one I'm having the problems with.

HDD is set as Master
Burner is set as Slave
DVD is set as Master

I am thinking this is either a CPU or Memory problem, any tips advice would be greatly appreciated.

i would believe this is ram

why?

my p-4 1.5 is doing the same in xp the only three things we have in common is liteon drives40x
p-4 but mines a willie and xp

the clincher for me on mine i was getting error msgs every once in a while with a memory address
but since it started getting worse i don't get those anymore lol
but since i am running 4x64 modules of ram no crimms it would be hard to track which one is bad on mine
hence i am saving for a new mobo and 1066 rdram.

mine affects opening and closing programs, especially i.e.,solitare(spider)but doesn't affsct dvd or cdr performance.

hope this helps

I use to get the same memory address error message. Are you saying that it is most likely that the stick is bad or the mobo itself? Cuz if it's the RAM stick why wouldn't u just get a new one? I'm planning to get a RAM first thing 2morrow morning.

well let me start by saying yes it most likely is a bad ram stick not necessarily bad just a corrupt address

but an update:
i reloaded an image of my win xp partition using powerquest drive image 2002 (i had loaded capture drivers and programs and had added aspi suport to the original) now no more hesitations or freezes so you might try a reinstall of the os or different drivers.i still know that i get memory address problems and until i correct this my problems at one time or another will return.

now why i won't just get a new one lol

rdram must be installed in pairs,i have two pairs of 64mb rdram ie 4 sticks, the problem in my case is occasional and so hard to trace to which stick.i can buy new at 40.00 and try it in each slot knowing that this problem may wait days before surfacing again(letting me know that i need to move the new stick to another slot to test that slot) or since my motherboard offers no overclocking,i can upgrade the motherboard and rdram to 256 or 128 sticks and have 512mb or a gig as i will replace all 4 sticks.thus avoiding all that switching and testing lol

seeing as i already have a motherboard although it is in another state and won't be shipped until christmas well then there is no rush to fix it.if it happens to screw up this motherboard well i am going to toss it out anyway.

you might consider this dumb lol but shrugs it works for me especially since my problem has disappeared for now.

hope this helps
mike
