Please help me deciding upgrade

I currently own a sytem :

AMD64 3000+ (754)
ASUS K8V
Powercolor 9800pro 128MB
512 MB RAM Hynix
420 WATT PSU
120 GB Seagate HDD SATA
SONY DVD ROM
LG CD Writer

I am planning to upgrade CPU,motherboard,AGP . I am not sure I should upgrade the AGP as I am confused about which is better the Nvidia's SLI or ATI's Multi-rendering. or maybe should I retain my current AGP,only upgrade the CPU to AMD64 3200+ (939) and get an ASUS A8V or MSI Platinum.

Based on what I have read ATI products perform well when implementing DirectX. but NVidia has the PS 3.0 support, So which is more beneficial or futureproof.

Coz if I get the Nforce4 SLI motherboard, I have to live Nvidia cards only for a long time.which have some driver issue.
should I wait for the ATI muti-rendering mobos and then switch over..

Please help me, as the more I read the more difficult it becomes in deciding.

I think you should wait a while before upgrading that CPU. Going from a A64 3000+ to a A64 3200+ is not what I would call money well spent 😉

Do you have a huge budget for SLI? Unless you're getting a couple 6800s, it's not a very good idea, and even then you might be better served just getting a single faster card.

What about just getting a newer AGP card and keeping your 3000+? You can upgrade to a gig of ram for cheap now too.

What's your budget and what's your goal?

EDIT: oh, and welcome to AT 🙂

Thanks for replying

Well the point is transition from 754 to 939 as the AMD64 3000+(754) and the AMD64 3200+(939) are clocked at the same speed, I beileve you get an extra boost with the FSB with the latter CPU.

My objective is to maintain the number of replacable components as low as possible, in other words if I want higher performance, I can replace the CPU and retain the 939 based mobo and upgrade to FX 53 or a better CPU later on.

I will not be getting couple of 6800's, as I don't have that kind of budget,I might think just getting one for now, but I am not comfortable with Nvidia, As I have mentioned about game performance for DirectX related games.

Ofcourse RAM upgrade to 1 gig was a wise suggestion, Thanks

Can you sell your current stuff to someone for close to what you got it for?

It just seems like a bad idea to me. To me it sounds like you're going to spend ~$275 to go from 754 to 939 and get a small speed increase (that you may or may not even notice) so that later on you can upgrade.

Why not wait until your budget allows you to get something like your final goal? (by the way, I think the FX processors are a terrible buy... a 4000+ will perform almost the same from what I read in this article.)

Why buy a 3200+ 939 now when you see at most a minor performance boost if you're going to need to sell it when you have the cash to upgrade again?

Oh, and I'm not sure if you know about AGP vs. PCI-e.

It seems like you're using AGP to refer to your videocard when it is an interface for the videocard. (I don't know if interface is the right word... I mean slot basically)

AGP is what you are currently using with your 9800pro, but PCI-e is what the industry is changing over to now.

754 motherboards use AGP (with 1 exception i think)
939 motherboards use AGP or PCI-e

If you want to eventually have a better videocard, CPU, and motherboard, but can only do one at a time, you're kind of in a dilema.

Ideally, in the end you would want both 939 and PCI-e for future upgradability.

SLI and ATI's multi-rendering are both PCI-e technologies (not sure on ATI though, but ATI seems to be pushing heavily on PCI-e)

If you upgrade just your CPU/motherboard now, you will have to get an AGP board to keep your 9800pro and wont be able to use SLI or Multirendering.

If you upgrade just your videocard, you will need to stick with AGP to stay compatable with your current motherboard.

If you want the most future upgradability, I'd wait until I could do everything at once and not make any compormises. Wait until you can afford a nice PCI-e board, 939, and a PCI-e videocard.

i reccomend, for a 939 board, chaintech VNF4...i may revise this reccomendation after i get my pci-e card and therefore it will work (it requires you to use pci-e, you cant use PCI)
