please HELP me decide on a processor, cause i dont know which would be better

Ok i am buying a new PC, im buying from dell because i can get 40% off the total price, or i wouldnt buy from the, but thats alot off!.
This is the system

Dell XPS
Media center edition
2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz- 4 DIMMs
160GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/ Native Command Queuing
256MB PCI Express? x16 (DVI/VGA/TV-out) nVidia GeForce 6800
and theres some other stuff

BUT i still dont know what processer to get, im looking at either

Pentium® 4 Processor 640 with HT Technology (3.20GHz, 800 FSB)
OR
Pentium® 4 Processor 650 with HT Technology (3.40GHz, 800 FSB)
OR
Pentium® D Processor 830 with Dual Core Technology (3.0GHz, 800FSB)

i have no idea which one would be best. Im basically trying to decide between the 650 and the D 830. Im gonna use the pc for gaming, multimedia and obviosly lost of internet use. I need to know which is the better overall processor. I know the D is better at multi tasking (which i do often, but not too heavy, prolly just photoshop, alot a firefox windows, itunes and mabey a download or something else) but it is not as good as the 650 for gaming, which i also want to be able to do nicely. As long as i can nicely run games like BF2 and Doom3 online and smooth and a good graphics setting, it doesnt matter to me. Will i lose alot of multitasking if i get the 650? and how bad is the pentuim D really at gaming? can someone please help me decide which to buy. I really appreicate any thanks.

first of all, 40% off= +30% more than it woudl cost to build it on your own. if you're my age or older than you can do it! just research for a few weeks and you'll figure it out. if you want to game on that, i can make a better socket a gaming computer for like $800-900.

by the way, you probably won't notice the difference between the 640 and 650. if the upgrade is less than $100 to get the pentium D, go for it. the pentium D WILL run hot though...but i guess its not such a big deal if it's from dell.

i would never in my life be able to build my own, so im gonna go with is.

the upgrade form a 640 to 650 cost 100 bucks but to upgrade to a D 830 its only 50 bucks. How will the D 830 do when it comes to gaming though? and im not sure what u meant by the heat wont be a prob since its from dell...as in it wont be a problem because the stuff they give me will be enough? or ...?

He meant it more like "You're buying from dell, no need to worry about your temperatures beucase you're not going to overclock anyways."

40% off? I'm not even sure if a custom build can touch that deal, but - post your price (with the 40% off discount) - there's a chance that building your own will be cheaper. I'm estimating that a custom-built system with similar specs (but using AMD X2 3800+ instead, performance for the win) would cost roughly $1000.

Edit: 2GB of RAM? Try $1100 maybe.

Psst. Don't worry about all that. The process will take you about 2 hours, and it's really not too difficult. http://www.mechbgon.com/build/index.html <-- With that guide I don't think you'll have problems.

Ah well, if you don't feel like building....to each his own I guess.

PS: I'd go for the 830 over the 650, multitasking FTW.

The Pc is gonna cost me 1300 overall with all the cupons and other stuff. It also comes with surround sound speakers, 3 year warranty, nice ass 19 inch monitor, lost of other nice extras, but i would probably build my own if i was up to it, but im just not. So yea, how would the D 830 be for gaming?....and why is it cheaper than the 650 if its better?

the 650 has hyperthreading right?
if ti does, the 650 will be fine for light multithreading and better for heavy gaming.
for heavy multithreading and light gaming, the 830 will be better.

I'm leaning toward the 830 though since it is better overall and cpu dosent really affect gaming performance as lnog as you play atr a decent resolution ti stress the video card(like 10x7 or 12x10 high in most games.)

You can't beat that deal if you build your own. Go for it 😉.

...hmm i really do not plan on building my own computer. Its just something im not up too..even if it saves me money (by the way this comp is a gift from my parents anyway). I really just need some advice on Processor. How will the D 830 do when it comes to gaming? and how much multitasking ability do i really lose with the 650..and why does it cost more? i need a balance so i can buy the best overall. bot gaming and multitasking are really improtant to me

I think you might have misunderstod. I meant that dell deal you were getting is pretty awesome, so go for it 😛.

The D should be fine for gaming, what really makes a big difference is your video card. 6800? No problems. If you can upgrade to an X800XL or a 6800GT or a 7800GT then that would be better. 830D is no weak performer in the gaming department - it's pretty strong, but the D would be better overall.

Heh...if you want to game, Intel is not the way to go.

hey, intel processors work too you know. just because they arent as good, doesnt mean you cant game. he just wants to bick up a dell, plug it in, and turn it on. i understand that fully. go for the PD

i think intel has some catatrosphic problem with ut2004 on some config(dualcore configs suffer from this) or something. i think fps are capped at 48fps or something(was mentioned in Computer Gaming World and some other review site) very low on dualcore intel dualcores no matter the setting. otherwise, the pentium 830 should be fine.

dude only 50 more for a pentium d is a good deal. go with the cheapest possible graphics card. that makes the computer a gaming computer. buy one online (people will tell you which one). the one you have selected is around a little less than $200 ish, but dell considers it top of the line card and charges a LOT.

After he mentioned the 40% coupon he got, I had to take a stroll over to Dell and check it out. They've finally gotten the shipments of 7800GTXs in and nForce4 SLI mobos. $850 extra to get the 2 x 7800GTX upgrade package 🙁.

You kidding? That's a sweet deal. 7800GTX costs about $450 each right? Add the price up(2 7800GTX's), then add in the cost of an SLI mboo. That's one helluva deal.

Yeah, but you have to account for the fact that the $850 is tacked onto the hidden fee Dell already includes for the base model graphics card, which is the GeForce 6800. So it's more like $150 + $850. The $1300 or whatever it is they charge for the most basic model already includes the cost of a 6800. The $850 is an additional amount added onto that, it's not substituted for $150 that a 6800 would have cost.
