Hi. =)

Ok... price is a small factor, but what I'm really after is efficiency.

P1130 FD Trinitron® Monitor (19.9" viewable - flat screen)
or
19 in 1900FP Dell Ultrasharp? Digital Flat Panel Display

They are practically the same size screen... but one is a massive CRT, and the other is a thin, flat-panel (I'm thinking desk space here).

So, just how much better is a flat-screen CRT than a flat-panel display as far as *gaming* goes? Is the difference so massive that I should get the CRT, or so slight that I should just go with the flat-panel to save desk space?

If you need specific info on either of these two monitors in order to help me better, what do I need to research and bring back to this board?

Thanks!!

Thanks in advance!!

It's not slight, you will notice ghosting. The 1900FP is about the same as a Samsung 191T which I have. I can play newer games such as Unreal 2, UT2k3, C&C generals, etc.. without many problems. Some older games like counterstrike look like horse sh!t. If I was a huge gamer I would have stuck with the crt, but I am more concerned about eyestrain, so I got the LCD. Movies look good on it though.

If your gaming find a 21" crt in the same price range as the Dell 1900FP. You should be able to find a good one.

The 1800FP is very good for gaming , I was running dual 21" G520Ps but now I run an 1800FP alongside my G520P...

G520P & 1800FP side by side.
G520P/1800FP

When I first got the 1800FP I was pretty judgmental of it, but now, after having it awhile I feel I was too hard on it.
If I could only keep one of the 2 monitors I would have a very tough decision to make..and unlike a month ago when
I first got I am almost embarrased to admit that I would lean towards the 1800FP.

It is a stellar performer and I grossly underestimated it when I first got it, in one months time my views have
changed dramatically.

BTW I have read that the 1800FP outperforms the 1900FP so you might consider saving a few bucks if you go LCD.

Ok... so the 1800FP truly holds up well on fast-paced games? Convince me moreso on that... =) This is a big decision for me, and I just want to be sure before I pick one. Also... with the Trinitron, how do your eyes feel after awhile on that?

Let me some it up to you this way. There is NOT ONE LCD on the market currently that will not have artifacts or ghosting under extreme gaming conditions. So if any visual anomalies will grate on you, do NOT get an LCD for gaming.

Now, if you have successfully passed the first portion, then the second portion becomes a relative subjectiveness to your tolerance for artifacts, ghosting and the like while gaming. It would be hard to judge that without you personally working with the monitor in question.

If games are your main concern then go with the FD Trinitron AG... and I have no trouble staring at the Sony for 8-10 hours straight.

Alright... thanks you two. Those last two comments have sold me on the Trinitron. I completely appreciate it, and I will write Sony and ask them to send you two a commision on the sale of the monitor that is about to take place. heh

PrinceXizor, that's a pretty cut and dried comment there. How did you come about that assumption? Do you have first-hand experince or are you simply going by stats and what other people assume about LCDs?

I can tell you right now, that while my 1800FPs do blur the very slightest amount in fact action games, it is really no more than what I have experienced with CRTs. I have yet to see any artifacts and I do believe that the games I play (UT2003, BF1942, Unreal2, Devastation, Iron Storm, Splinter Cell) would fall into the category of "extreme gaming conditions."
