Hi guys,

We have a budget underspend at work so I've been told to get myself a new PC. I've had my eyes set on 5900x for a long time but they literally don't exist here(UK) and I have to buy all the parts by the end of the month. So it's pretty a toss up between 5800x and 10850k, I just can't decide. Apart from cpu the rest of the system will be pretty much the same(MSI Tomahawk B550/Z490 board, 2x32GB 3600 CL18 ram, couple of nvme drives, ). There will be no gaming on this machine, it's purely for day-to-day IT support so dozens of browser tabs, dozens of RDP windows, few VMs running, Teams, Outlook, Teamviewer, occasional video transcode etc etc. I appreciate that either option it will be overkill for what this machine will be doing (my current Xeon 5675 is doing just fine) but as it is with budgets it's a "use it or lose it" kind of situation.

I'm leaning towards the 5800x but I read a lot about them running hot even at idle and also being a lifelong Intel user it's tempting to just stay with team blue. I'm so undecided that I will most likely make the purchase based on responses here. Other suggestions are also welcome (my budget is £1500).

As this PC will be running 24/7 and often unattended, I'd probably prefer a big air cooler instead of liquid cooling, so there will be no overclocking(most likely).

Many thanks for any input.

Some observations, not intended to offend you, but rather enlighten you. Your first post is a versus thread. You identify yourself as "team blue". Then you add more accelerant by stating the responses will determine what you purchase. That is an old school flame bait/trolling style of posting. This may be a perfectly innocent post, and request for assistance. But I hope you can see how it comes off as something completely different.

I will offer you some advice, as I am willing to give you the benefit of a doubt as to your intentions here.

Scenario 1: You build the Intel system. You have no significant CPU upgrade path.

Scenario 2: You build the AMD system. Question: why B550 instead of x570? Next, The 5800x has less cores and threads, and due to stock issues, you have it up against a 10c/20t. This favors Intel given the extra threads and pricing. The one advantage the AM4 provides, is a very real CPU upgrade path. If that is a non factor, stick to your tribalistic tendencies and stay "team blue". HTH.

Thank you for your somewhat condescending response, some observations of my own: I said I'm a lifelong Intel user - because it just so happened. For me the most important criterion is best-bang-for-a-buck, there's no fanboyism here. Even though I said I'm leaning towards AMD you were quick to tell me to stick to my "tribalistic tendencies" - if that's not flame bait/trolling style of posting then I don't know what is. For me team blue is just an expression meaning Intel, with no personal affiliation to it. Granted, now that I read my original post again I see how it could be seen that way, but that was not my intention. I guess I have been away from forums for too long to spot it in time.

Now that we have that out of the way let's get back to the topic at hand, shall we?

I chose B550 over x570 purely in relation to MSI's Tomahawk. From what I gather both are very good boards but the b550 has dual ethernet(which I want) and doesn't have a chipset fan. There may be other good boards I just don't have the time to sit through reviews.

I think at stock 5800x will beat the 10850k in most scenarios, even though it has less cores/threads. I agree about the cpu upgrade path, I may be able to drop in a 5900x or even 5950x in the future should they ever become available. The only real advantage Intel has at the moment is pricing and availability but the supposed hot-running of the 5800x is what concerns me, and the recent usb-disconnecting issues do not help either. I hoped there may be 5800x users here that could chime in with how their setups are running. Coming to think of it I suppose I posted wrong question in wrong section...

Again, I did not intend to offend you.

There is a 5000 series builders thread in the CPU forum that has a wealth of info. If you have not perused it already. You will see that not all 5800x owners have temp issues. I find some AM4 boards are responsible for thermal issues, due to aggressive default settings. I usually manually set a few things in the UEFI, like clock speed and voltage, that alleviate the thermal issues while providing slightly enhanced performance.

Here is a reddit thread about the AGESA update for the USB issues.
I have only experienced it on one B350 board, and I have built and used a bunch of Zen through Zen 2 systems. No Zen 3 yet, but that will change soon. The issue was also limited to certain devices, others did not malfunction in the same slots.

I haven't had any USB issues with my X570 board and my 5800X, nor when I had a 3700X in it. The new Ryzens can display higher temps than one might be used too, but my understanding is that this is due to several reasons and not necessarily something to worry about. Part of it is the hottest parts of the CPU are monitored, where it used to be the sensors did not measure the hottest parts of the CPUs. Part of it is also due to smaller surface area of the die.

Anyway, I hope that helps a bit. Also, no need to really OC either of these CPUs IMO, though memory tweaking, especially on the Ryzens, could be worth it.

Thanks guys,

5800x ordered, but I decided to go with x570 Tomahawk after all. I hope it will work well otherwise I won't hear the end of it! (my boss is a major Intel+nVidia fanboy)

All worked out well in the end.

I may have been lucky but with all bios settings on default my sample idles at 30C and doesn't go above 80 under full load, and that is under Noctua NH-15 with only one fan(had to drop the second fan because of tall ram modules). I'm absolutely fine with that.

So yeah, very happy with the purchase and stoked about the performance level too :)
