Please help me debug this annoying 6800 Ultra Issue...

I can't complain about the FPS and overall speed of the card, but I get "freezes".

Freezing lasts anywhere from 3-7 seconds. Run full complement of virus/spyware/adware checks and i have none. Issue can happen in "profile" or "gaming" service configurations from Black Vipers site.

I'm a flight simulation nut and run FS2004 (DirectX), LOMAC (DirectX), and IL-2 (Open GL). I get good-great FPS in these games, but I get the "freeze" when running FS2004 and LOMAC. Aside from a few "slight stutters" in IL-2, it seems to run fine, and I cannot recreate the failure there.

3D mark scores seem reasonable...

3DMark01 = 20k (froze here)
3DMark03 = 13,400 (maybe freeze here, can't remember)
3DMark05 = 5,400 (had a freeze here)

System in sig is not O/Ced.

I've tried 66.93, 67.66b (Daisha modifieds), 71.20... No change. Upgrade directx 9.0b to 9.0c... no change. Tried reinstalling nforce drivers... no change.

I'm thinking it might be a directx-Audigy sound related issue though I disabled the card in device manager and still got a freeze.

Perhaps I need to try some more OGL games to confirm that theory; any suggestions?

How about Direct X settings in the vid driver? Could any of these be at fault? How much should be allocated for PCI textures... I'd assume none?

Plan ahead is to try to uninstall/reinstall Audigy 2 Zs drivers. If that doesn't work then a clean install. If that doesn't work, I'm going to cry.

Anyone?

Have you checked the temps of your card and/or your CPU? Maybe one or both are overheating. I know that it is not freezing in that one game but still it is something to check.

Okay. What if that works? I know from previous diddling that AGP fastwrites "off" lowers performance by about 30% on my rig... That seems like an unreasonable solution. What's the point in crippling this powerful rig?

If I do determine that makes the system stable, am I out of luck?

Near as I can tell GPU never sees above 68degC, CPU never above 45degC under load.

It's very unlikely turning off FastWrite impairs your system by that much. 😛 Usually there's about 1% - 5% performance loss, no more. The only thing that FastWrite may have a big influence on is decoding/encoding with the help of the card, as that simply requires a direct connection between the GPU and CPU.

At least it did for me with my ATI X800 XT PE. Decoding WMV9 HD "Step Into Liquid" wouldn't go smooth without FastWrite turned on. 😛 Also, I don't get any system instability. However, my system sometimes crashes while playing games, though, but I blame that to the beta ATI drivers for Windows XP 64-bit, because FastWrite has worked perfectly for me in the past on Windows XP 32-bit, SP1. SP2 unfortunately screwed up everything with Microsoft's UAGP and VIA chipsets. ;\ Meh. 😛

I benchmarked in FS2004. 36 FPS at the runway at SEATAC. Disable fast writes in the bios = 30ish. That's about 18-19% drop. 30% comes from momentary min fps situations. I would have no problem with a 1-5% performance loss but I can't stomach the crippling effect of fastwrites of in my flight sims... This bites.

You can't have your cake and eat it too🙂

Either turn off fastwrites and play

...or leave it on and not be able to play🙂

I have roughly the same system that you do, well same card anyway (modded though) and my fast writes are on, haven't had any lockups.. The only thing that sometimes happens as at the start of a game (doom3/far cry) I get a minor hickup which is the initial texture loading when I first start move around, I had more of these when I was using older drivers.. They virtually went away when I upgraded to the 71.81 drivers, maybe try that?

Have you checked with BFG to see if they have a newer bios for the card. I was having having issues with my EVGA 6800 U on both Nforce & via chipsets. The latest BIOS solved my frustrating sound loop freezes.

You work out a solution? I have been messing with my configuration for over a month now. I have been on several web sites and read several stories just like this one. The common factor seems to be the 6800 cards. Seeing this post 8 days old and nothing new was wondering if fixed or just went to a new video card?

I am curious about this too... I received a BFG 6800 Ultra last week and put it in my system... After running Half-Life for 5-10 minutes, it would start to freeze for maybe 5 seconds, then run for a short while, freeze again, over and over... I checked temps and the GPU was at 66C... I was regretting spending as much as I did on the card, so I got an RMA and just pulled out the card and put back in my 9800 Pro.

So when you went back to your old card the problem goes away? I am beginging to think more and more that my $335 6800 PCI-E card is gettting mothballed.

You may want to check and make sure that your AGP voltage settings in system bios is set to 3.5 volts. That helped me with stuttering problems.

If you mean me, yes... I went back to my 9800 Pro and updated the drivers to the 5.2's and all is well. I just don't game as much any more, and between the cost and the stuttering, decided to stick with what I have for awhile.

make sure your 2d and 3d clocks are the same.... also check if there is a newer version of your card bios. many cards had this problem a while ago until new bios's were released.
