Hey guys my computer is about to fry any minute!
My specs.
800 T-Bird
Crappy PC CHips Mobo
2 WD 30 Gig HD
2 Stick of 256 pc133 ram
1 Sound Card
1 Nic
1 Geforce 2
Nothing is overclocked!
-------------

Ok here my problems, i think this is why i am getting Blue screens all the time in Win2k.
With the Case open
CPU Temp: 161 Degrees F
System Temp: 93 Degrees F

Now on to the questions: i think i might need a better CPU fan whats the best one you can recomened? And the other thing is i dont have a system fan, what do u guys recomend for that? And what other suggestions do u have? Thanks in advance!

Holy macaroni Batman! An 800 bird shouldn't read that kind of temp (mikewarrior, prove me wrong if this board outputs some crazy, off-kilter temps:p) 71º (most monitor temps in Celcius) is pretty toasty for a CPU. First question: what heat-sink are you using? are you using thermal grease, a thermal pad, or nothing?

Get a sys fan...Panaflows (L1A 80mm) will move plenty of air and are nice and quiet. Sunon, Nidec, YS-tech, Delta--loud, also do the job nicely. These open-case temps tell me that you either don't have your HSF seated correctly, are getting bogus readings, or are not using thermal paste/pad. I know for a fact that a ChromeOrb can take a bird 800 but isn't a great HS but is cheap and quiet. Oh wait...is your CPU a slot A or socket A?

Ok i looked on my CPU and the fan on it says coolerstar ball bearing... as for sys fans i was thinking about this fan http://sales.goldmine-elec.com/prodinfo.asp?prodid=4072 is that good? it was talked about well in the Hot deal forum. The mobo is socket A, what would u recomend for themal grease/pad, please be specific with a link because i dont think anyone of those is applied, but to check how would i know?

i dont know alot about cooling and the fact this was a barbone and when i got this i didnt now know much/care about cooling then so i didnt pay much attention to the fan.

THanks alot!

so to review which heatsink WITH fan should i get, and what thermal paste as i read thermal pads are cheap & bad.

I assume you have a stock heat-sink if this was a barebones system--maybe a Coolermaster or similar. What you'll need to do, is get ahold of some Acrtic Silver III (3) thermal grease. If you gotta get some, you might as well get the best as it only costs about $7 or so for a tube that'll last a long time. You'll need to remove the heat-sink from the CPU, clean both of them, apply some of the Artic Silver, and re-seat the sink. (the only way to know if you have some thermal paste/pad installed is to remove the sink and once you take it off, you need to put more on.

That Delta case fan would be fine and it's a pretty nice price. Might be a little loud but porbably not too bad.

<< where do i place the sys fan? >>

Depends on your case--should be a place in the back of the case to mount it as an exhaust.

I don't believe that this mb is a particularly high reading motherboard, but the 93F system temp is alarming...

you probably need to add quite a bit of case cooling to really drop your CPU temps much.

WHOA!

well i dont believe that system should be running at those temps...i would open her up, remove the cpu - and other components

look for anything unusual and post--those temps are unheard of!

Those temps are unbelievable. What kind of case do you have? I would think mounting the system fan in the front would help. Is your cpu fan dusty (or even working?). Maybe your ide cables are blocking the front ventalation holes?

Place your case somewhere so that your computer can get some fresh air. The last thing you want is that hot air re-circulating back into your computer.

Oh, man, you bought a Chrome Orb? Those things aren't really the most efficient things out there.

Some mobo's have capacitors close to the CPU socket; since the Orb isn't a conventional design, there is more chance of problems with surrounding components. They have something there for like $5 which should be fine. Here it is.
Get that, some ASII, and a few 80mm case fans and you should get much lower temps.

I've installed this HS a few times on a few boards and I'd have to say it's not as easy as most. The clip seems to require more force than usual but it's always worked for me. That is unless it's a space/capacitor issue like Jeff7 mentioned

well i was placeing the orb in the wrong way and when i put it in the right way there is not enough space, oh well i will have to order the one jeff7 reccomened and return this one... will let you know how everything works out, my temps are now hovering in the 120's with the case open but i added some Artic Silver 3... later.
