Tips:

1) nevar enable the remote-administration feature

2) make sure SPI is enabled

3) optionally, you can arbitrarily block some ranges of ports that you know you don't have a need for. But what ports those may be will depend on what you do over the connection (games, IRC, Remote Desktop Connection, whatever).

And don't leave the username and password settings as ^

Anyone have any tips or anything though?

Disable the wireless until you need it and have learned about and configured WPA security.

Identify the revision; download the manual and read it.

http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellit...name=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper

Get it configured and working as a firewall + gateway.

Download the lastest firmware if it's not already installed.
Install the firmware, and re-configure any settings that might have changed.

If you're starting with default settings, those are mostly fine. If you're not, then you might consider forcing it to default settings to start.

Stuff to do then:

1. Disable / secure wireless
2. Change password
3. Fully enable firewall (one option is disabled by default -- enable it unless you're running local servers)
4. Verify remote administration disabled
5. Verify default settings for internet access, or change to your ISP's requirement (default automatic typically fine for cable, need to supply account & password for PPOE ADSL).

There are more settings there than anybody here can tell you about conclusively (without cheating and looking up docs, etc.) -- if you don't understand them, then the safest thing to do is to leave them at default values, which I think everyone here will have done to some degree.

You should be able to walk through all this while looking at the on-line manual...

Hi, Go to linksys.com, downloads, your model no. and User Manual. When it's all in and they don't give you much help about what the download is doin, just wait, you can read it and/or save it to disk for later viewing. My model's manual was less than 1.5 MB. Luck, Jim

Which ISP are you using? Most have a detailed set of instructions to follow, step by step, if you know where to look.

Thanks for your help everyone. Ok so i guess i dont need help with everything, but i have a few more questions/comments. I added filter proxy, but filter cookies, active x, and java i didnt because itd not let me view alot of sites. My question is how can i make it super secure, as in blocking all the ports and enabling only the ones i want? Is that even a good idea? thanks

As an addition if there is a firnware upgrade I would do that, it may patch some security related issues that were discovered post production.
