Please help me choose good parts for 1st build

I have a brother who will help me build this but I want you experts to help me choose the best parts for my budget.

I am not a gamer but want decent video for things other than games.

Some things I'm looking at now are either a core 2 duo 4300 or the 3600 x2.

I am new so go easy on me. I have a case and power supply that is running a 1800+ xp now a dvdrw and a wd special edition 8mb cache harddrive which I am thinking of not upgrading.

go easy on me Im new to hardware, thanks for any ideas and help.
 
First post. Welcome to AT......I would get an Intel Dual Core system. What kind of budget do you have and do you plan on doing anything else with the rig besides gaming?

We need to know these things to help you out.
 
my budget is 1000

but Im not much of a gamer but have thought about getting into it so I want a midrange video system.

I love to watch movies on pc so need good divx performance
 
I would go with a set up similiar to this:

Intel E6300 - $183.00
Asus P5B-E LGA 775 - $145.00
OCZ Gold 2x 1GB DDR2 800 - $189.00
Western Digital 74GB Raptor- $159.99
Western Digital 320GB - $94.99
eVGA 7600GS - $119.99
SeaSonic 430W PSU - $94.99

Total is around $983.00

If you get rid of the PSU and the Raptor, then you will save $255.00 which would bring the total to $728.00
 
I really was just trying to save you some money since you aren't a hard core gamer, but yeah, the 7600GT is worth the money.

That's what I told her. If she gets rid of the PSU and Raptor then she saves $255.00.
 
I believe the pms sent would be better responded to within the thread nina99 as the thread is a good basic/midrange setup (which there seems to be a few threads about 😛) the reason I'd suggested the dell deal as the e521 is upgradeable to a point which from your answers the system w/ 20" lcd would be a great value/starting point ...anyway .. ok
also would I have to upgrade the dell psu to run 7600gt and if so which one is good? thanks

in the e521 the psu is capable of supplying the 7600gt

suggested and reason suggest the dvdrw as supplied by dell is that it is sata possibly which is easier to get from dell at the time build as opposed to adding later but the vidcard and possibly memory/harddrive(s) is easier addons for later.. the basic vista is faster than a comparatively same setup of xp as you can read up on in operating systems forum at AT and other websites but as far as xp(not sure if a dell resource cd(s) from before vista rollout would work or the legalities thereof..) and the 6150 based dell(the onboard video is pretty decent) in that deal most if not all drivers are available online(nvidia for one) ..I'd take the as configured 80gb sata out and place another larger sata drive in if going to use xp that way if you need to you'll still have it as stock setup... the main thing that I note with the dell is price for what you'll get..a fairly decent comp and a 20" lcd for the price 🙂 and money saved can be put towards other items either right now(the xp and separate harddrive) or later (higher performing vidcard) ...goodluck 🙂
 
Nina, I would suggest you build your own. You will get the system you want and it will be a better build.
