Hi, I'm not sure where to start, but I'll try! I ask for advice or a little psychological help because I feel stuck in an endless decision-making loop. Nothing serious or serious mind you, the problems are quite different, but I would still like to overcome this thing. I've always been a technology enthusiast, I've always had a PC since the days of the C64 and by PC I mean Fixed PCs. I also had a Playstation 4 slim (white, beautiful!) that I was happy with, but got stolen when thieves broke into my house a few years ago. Since I moved house (I live together and have a young daughter), I no longer have the space for a fixed PC and so I bought a laptop, which is more than fine for my needs and a console to play occasionally (in my case an xbox series S).

I've always been attracted to Apple products, of which I know the pros and cons well, but as an enthusiast I've always wanted to try this ecosystem. As a smartphone, I've always had models with Android (and before that with Symbian… what a time!) and only recently I got an "old" iPhone 11 with which I get on really well.

Now that I've given you a little preview, let's proceed.

I had an HP laptop with which I had replaced the desktop PC and I sold it for around 700 euros. I sold it because the battery was pretty worn out. The person who took it from me was not interested in this thing (he would have used it only connected to the power supply) and for this reason I was able to obtain such a figure.

After this laptop I bought another HP with which I didn't feel comfortable (seeing the battery go down constantly and visibly even if I did nothing seemed absurd to me). I made the return.

So I bought a 13" macbook air, phenomenal PC, infinite battery and for my needs it was fine but ... the 13" screen seemed too small in the long run and despite having used larger fonts, every now and then I had to focus or bring your eyes closer to the monitor. I also made this one.

Then I bought another lenovo laptop that I sold because the battery was even worse than the HP I had before.

Below I got a macbook pro M1 with the 16 inch screen. Another fantastic PC, but the idea of spending so much money on a product with which I do the same things I do with an 800 euro PC (say) made me bored. Obviously sold.

Now I have an LG laptop, still 16-inch, battery that doesn't have the same life as Macs but that's fine, ditto screen and other things, but the idea of going back to the Mac for an ecosystem fact has come back overbearing.

The problem is that in the last few years I've always made choices like whether I want to become an Apple user and stay closed like that (for better or for worse), but also stop using microsoft stuff (like the Xbox Series S in favor of a future ps5 slim).

However, I continue to have a fixation and think as if I should have everything in a single ecosystem or something like that, even if on balance it wouldn't change my life so much. For example, having a macbook + iphone and an xbox series S, in my head "out of tune" would make more sense to have macbook + iphone + ps5 or android + windows laptop + xbox and it keeps hammering my head.

However, I make 2 important clarifications:

1) I have had a permanent job for more than 20 years

2) I have a very normal social life, I go out regularly with friends and I go to the gym, it's not like I spend the whole day thinking about these things

3) I have a wonderful relationship with my partner and especially with my daughter

4) With the returns and the things I've sold, I haven't lost much money, thanks to the profit from the sale of the first PC, in fact, I'm still positive.

I mean, have any of you ever been in my situation?

No, because I have always been able to tell the difference between 2 and 4.

Start with these 2 questions

What is your budget.
What are you going to do with this PC

That will open up the next sets of questions such as the importance of...

speed
monitor size/resolution
storage

My budget is approx. 1500 euros

My "basic" use of the PC is to do the usual things on the net (home banking, pay bills, consult websites) and occasionally download something.
I'm no longer the "geek" I could have been years ago, when I had all the free time I wanted.

From a laptop, I'm looking for good autonomy, in the sense that I don't want to have to plug it in every day after using it for two hours on the sofa...
As a typical use, using macOS, Linux or Windows makes no difference to me, so in the end I start the PC, open the browser (firefox) or Bittorrent/JDownloader and do practically everything from there.
I had taken the Mac because after 30 years of Microsoft operating systems (and since I've always been left with a certain curiosity), I wanted to try something else. I was quite happy with it right away, but the thought of using something "professional and expensive" for the same use as a cheaper laptop made me want to sell it. And maybe that was my objective part speaking…

P.S. macOS apart from what I'm looking for objectively from a laptop I found it with the current LG that I own, macOS apart, for which I continue to be curious.
Bot post?

No, I'm not a bot :)

For example, having a macbook + iphone and an xbox series S, in my head "out of tune" would make more sense to have macbook + iphone + ps5 or android + windows laptop + xbox and it keeps hammering my head.

The first example involves three platforms, two of which may possibly be in the 'same ecosystem' (I'm not sure it is but anyway, I suppose a shared iCloud account may help in some way), the second scenario involves 5 platforms and three competing (to some extent) 'ecosystems', and is supposedly better (in your opinion) from a 'single ecosystem' perspective. I am confused, because to me the first example seems better than the second.

In your shoes I'd ask myself in what way does it benefit (or possibly work to a disadvantage) to have integration between one or more of the platforms. Me personally, I avoid integration as much as I possibly can because integration usually results in the device maker leveraging that to their advantage and your disadvantage (e.g. user behaviour tracking, having your files stored in their cloud storage system, etc), but I do want the devices to be able to communicate, for example I can plug in my Android phone into my Linux/Windows PC and access pretty much everything on it. You may like integration though because it can make the access of personal stuff across devices more seamless. However integration when it doesn't work can really throw a spanner in the works.

A typical piece of advice I give to customers is to avoid device function overlap. For example, a tablet and a laptop overlap quite a bit because they're mobile and can do general-purpose computing to varying extents. However, a single user is likely to gravitate to using one device generally and the other sits dust in the corner.

Clevo and the resellers tend to offer the best bang for the buck when it comes to the tech crammed in the case. If you want localized pricing they come in different regions under different names but the same model numbers.

This will limit the functionality / performance unless you're really willing to pay for premium low power setups.

The other option is to change the power profile to extend the battery or the other option would be using a power bank to supplement the laptop. I use a PB with my higher geared laptop or the CLA in the car to keep it charged while using it for things. There are ways to make things work longer if you get creative on the power side.

When using mine in the car unplugged I can get a couple of hours out of it by lowering the brightness and limiting things to the iGPU vs the higher power dGPU. When using the PB it can double the time if the PB isn't charging itself from the CLA. As well the CLA is like having it plugged into a wall outlet as long as not using the dGPU since USB PD is limited to 100W at this point until gadgets / cords get upgraded to PD 3.1.

It sounds more like you're looking for something more limited in terms of use with longer battery only power. Going with an ultralight or lower end CPU with limited power draw kind of points more towards a tablet type setup.

Things are always changing though when it comes to devices for being more power conscious. mLED panels are offering better brightness and lower power consumption but, they're limited to OEM use at this point to a select few devices and premium price tags.

If you're handy w/ a screw driver though on some laptops you can upgrade the battery pack fairly easily by popping the case open and removing some screws to swap it out. For instance the laptop I'm using I picked up for ~$1300 and then dumped a little time and cash into upgrading it from a FHD screen to a 4K/120hz screen for $300 and 15 minutes of time. For that $1300 though it was barebones and needed a drive / RAM and I upgraded the WIFI while I was in there and swapped the thermal paste for graphite pads on the CPU/GPU.
