Please help me choose a gaming laptop

I haven't been entirely up to speed on the GPU evolution in laptops, so its not entirely clear to me which GPUs are sufficient or good enough for my purposes and at the price point I am looking at.

A few considerations...

Budget: $1000
Purpose: Office use/schoolwork and heavy gaming
Minimum requirements: To be able to play the latest games at least at medium settings.

Is it possible to do this on the $1000 budget?

That's a tall order on $1k. Any way you can swing $1500?

It's actually pretty doable if you jump on something that's on sale, though I'm not sure of anything that's good for gaming with a regular price of under $1k. My friend bought an Asus laptop with a 9800M GT for $1k from Best Buy a few weeks ago, but it's gone up to $1250 now.
I've been seeing phenomenal deals on refurbed Gateways from TigerDirect several times during the last few months (9800M GTS, for under $800), but you really have to look out for those - they tend to sell out within a day or two, and pop up once every few weeks.

Oh, and portability doesn't matter to you, right? Because there's no way in hell you're going to find a cheap, portable laptop that's capable of heavy gaming.

I am not sure what you mean by portability. I am looking for a laptop, not a PC.

Are you asking whether I am looking for a lightweight laptop? If so, that does not matter.

In any case, it sounds like $1000 is only an option if there is a good sale. In that case, what laptop GPU specs (or GPU names) should be looking for when I look for laptops on sale?

I see that 9800M seems to be the GPU that most gaming laptops have at the lower or budget end. Is there any other GPU that might be a little better that I might find as well.

Oh, bad wording on my part. I meant you won't find something that'll be light/small or have good battery life.

In general, a laptop with a 9800M GPU would be ideal.

You can get an ASUS N80Vn-GP011C for around that price if you find a sale (I think it's $1100 at the egg right now). It has a P8600 CPU, 4GB RAM, and a 1GB nVidia 9650m GT video card.
