Please help me buy a modem @ Amazon.com

I'm upgrading from win98 to winxp and there aren't any winxp drivers for my Viking 56k v.90 usb modem. So I've decided to buy a v92 external modem from Amazon with my $100 in gift certificates that expire this month. I'm not sure which brands or models are good or bad. I was gonna buy this US Robotics USR5686E External 56K Faxmodem but I've read about people having problems with it on other forums. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated, thanx in advance. 🙂

V92 External Modems @ Amazon

Wow, amazon.com has lousy prices on modems! I would recommend picking up a $15 Winmodem from newegg.com, and spend that gift certificate on some books or DVD's. The performance impact of a Winmodem over a controller-based modem was a big deal back when everyone had 200 mhz processors, but nowadays it's hardly noticeable on modern CPU's.

I use that USR 5686 external modem. Works at better baud rate than another (external V.92 Zoom) modem that I tried and then returned to Best Buy.
I use it with this USB-to-serial adapter: Text
If you want to run Linux, you'll need a hardware modem, not a Winmodem.

I want a external because like vailr mentioned they're hardware not software modems. I plan to try out Linux and I want to avoid having problems later on.

If you take the time to look around on the net you will find that there are winmodems that are campatible with Linux. I even got one with Red Hat drivers on the CD once. For $10-$15 there are some good modems available. You can spend a lot if you want but if you look around you can save a lot too.

Ok I'll get a winmodem......if I wanted a internal pci modem. I still want and need a external. I'm sorry I forgot to mention this before but I just don't want to install another pci board on my motherboard.

U.S. Robotics 56K OEM 2976/77 models are hardware I think. I know both models have Linux drivers and work under Linux.

I paid $49 for my OEM 2977 @newegg

( internal )

I just double checked for You and it is a Hardware Modem.... I found the the same modem at Newegg.com and this is what their site said:

"US Robotics USR5610B 56K V.92 Internal PCI Performance Pro FaxModem Data/Fax Only (No Voice) - RETAIL Controller-based for superior performance. ControlCenter for optimum modem performance. Internet Call Notification (ICN) puts you in charge of incoming calls. This modem supports Linux and Windows, so it will work with a wide range of business applications and games. And speaking of games, you can switch the Performance Pro Modem into gaming mode any time you?re ready for some online competition. Model#: USR5610B"

From what I understand it's the best You can get for online gaming... Read Neweggs reviews here at:
