Please help!! Many webpages failing to load on Win2K with IE6

Help! I just installed Windows 2000 and installed all the latest updates from MS including IE 6.0 SP1. The problem is that I cannot, under any circumstances, access certain sites. Newegg.com/Mwave.com/Compgeeks.com and various others are completely inaccessible though Amazon and most others seem to work just fine (msnbc, cnn, techbargains.com). I thought that maybe I'd try Netscape, but I cannot access that webpage either.

Any ideas on what could be causing this? It's really quite frustrating because I want to browse some prices and probably buy some stuff, but I can't reach the sites! My connection is fast most of the time so that doesn't seem to be the issue. I try to go to Newegg, and it just perpetually loads -- nothing displays. I have checked my privacy settings, but no changes affect it in any way.

Help!! :Q

If you can access certain websites and not others, and you tried using both IE and Netscape, then it is most likely a DNS issue with your ISP. But, before calling for tech support, and opening up a DOS prompt and try to resolve the website addresses by typing:
tracert www.microsoft.com (or any of the websites that you cannot reach and see if it brings back an IP address. If it doesn't then it is definately time to call your ISP for support.

I had the same problem with stephanie's computer across the development. For some reason when I installed win XP on her system IE would just refuse to go to about half of the websites. All other online stuff worked, messenger, ICQ, Peer to peer. Just not IE fully. Only have of all the webpages out there. I reinstalled XP and same thing. Changed out the NIC and same thing. IE 6 just refused to work on this hardware for some reason. So, I mosied on over to www.mozilla.org and installed it. Haven't heard from her about it since.

One clarification: I haven't tried Netscape because I cannot download it. Netscape.com won't load.

Ok, the plot thickens. I tried the tracert, and while I did receive an IP address, the result of the trace was that the "destination net unreachable". WTF is that??? It seems like it keeps bouncing around on a particular set of servers and is unable to leave. The first 11 hops are spent on sites which end in the following: odn.ad.jp (yes, I'm in Japan).

I just tried Mwave.com, and it seemed to reach it (s1.multiwave.bbnplanet.net) but then it timed out for the last 14 hops.

I guess it's time to call the ISP? I'm baffled by this one. I would try Mozilla, but guess what? Can't access that site either.

It sounds like you're able to get packets around your ISP's network but not beyond that. This is usually the ISP's problem but since the same thing was happening with Stephanie's computer I would try another browser. There are tons of mirrors. Just do a search on google. I think you can even get it from the larger download places. Netscape too although it's just an older version of mozilla with spyware.

check the HOSTS file and your DNS server entries and compare them to your ISP's settings.

something may have got screwed in the transistion.

Who the hell is Stephanie?????????

She's a student at University of Guelph. Lives across my townhouse development. She's a roommate of Tina from Barbados, my step mum's friend. Does that help you any?
