Please help! Losing display settings!

I'll try and keep this brief, but I am totally computer illiterate!

When I start my computer, I have red vertical lines on the monitor. It passes the 'windows' window and then tells me to re set my colour and screen size. I cancel that message and let it boot up and then change the settings and re-start. I have to do this any where between 3 - 20 times before the changes 'stick' and the computer works great with no lines.

Has anyone any idea why this could be happening. I have all the latest drivers, but can't tell you much about the PC, as it was built by a friend. I know I have a Gateway2000 monitor, Voodoo3 graphics card, 56K modem, 550 processor on an Iwill motherboard.

I am so desperate now, that the computer is about to be thrown out and I'll just buy another one.

Any ideas/help would be greatly appreciated from this computer idiot 🙂

Why would the problem suddenly occur? The card has been in the computer since Xmas with no problems and only started messing up a month ago. Is there anything I can do to fix it or do I have to waste more money on this stupid thing 🙂

 
So basically I have to go and buy another one?? I have a Voodoo3, what shall I get this time?? Any reccommendations?
