Anyone know if it's possible to buy an external, region-free DVD player that can connect to a multimedia projector?

If so, where?

Assuming that the projector accepts standard RCA (composite/component) inputs, try looking at Area450.com. I have a Sampo DVD player which was out of the box region-switchable using a hidden menu code. Newer models may require a firmware upgrade, but most of those can be handled by burning a CD with the appropriate update files.
