I hooked my sons computer to my hub so he can go on the internet but I want to gain acess to his drive and dump files directly into it and remove files if needed to clean up space. I am dissabled ad it would be easier for me to do it this way instead of going from room to room and having to burn onto a disk if I decide the internet is too much for him and dissconect from internet.

SO anyway I have Flashfxp and I went to the site and did it step by step on both computers making a site, then a ISP but I just cannot get them to connect. It hangs on connecting for a while then dissconects and tries again. I turned off firewalls on both sides thinking that had some play but no effect.

So anyone out there use this program and trasfers files back and forth that can tell me what in the heck I am doing wrong
Going crazy over here and thanks in advance!

**EDIT** I also wish to play racing games with my son as well so if anyone can tell me how to set that stuff up that would be great.
Please keep in mind I am an idiot to this kind of stuff :)

Thats right, if you can take me step by step and get my computers talking to each other I will give you three of any music cd, playstation game, or pc game title. NOT three of each but a combination of three to shoose from

In order to get them I must be able to gain acess to both computers using FlashFXP. As soon as it works pick out your stuff and I will happily mail it to you. And again keep in mind I am new to this and a idiot so make sure to explain it to me step by step holding my hand the entire way :)

Pick from this list of goodies! Sorry no dvd's, xbox, or vhs tapes unless you do an exceptional job in getting this going!

Are you running Windows XP on both machines? If you are, you dont need to use any external program, just use the networking utility in it.
Go to My Network Places-> Set up home or office network and just follow the intructions. If you want to access the other drives, you need to add them from your system if it dosent show up already. If you want to edit the files on the drive then go to your sons computer, and My computer-> (particular drive) -> right click for properties-> Sharing and there you have an option to let other users edit files on the drive.

Just a thing to watch out for, when you setup the network, Windows will ask a name for the network, remember to use the same one on both computers. As for the games, when you access the lan option inside the game, your sons computer should show up. One of you need to act as a server and start a game which shows up on the other's computer and then you're ready to go.

Hope this helps.

CD.

I did that on both computers and when we were done I didnt see anyplace anywhere that remotly looked like i would click on i tto gain acess to his computer. In fact I got another icon in network properties and I lost my internet connection untill I deleted the connection.
If I do that where do I go to be able to gain acess into his files?
And yes I am using xp pro sp2 with a Belkin 4 port router

If you did what I said, you should be able to see his files by going to My Computer -> My Network Places
I think that icon you got in network properties was the Lan icon. Since you deleted it, you may have to do it again to try what's given above.

go to tools >map network drive and type in \\ip address of sons pc\c$
then select "connect using a different username"
enter sons computer name\username with admin rights on sons pc
and the password used to access with that username

try that

I again did this step by step to the T and I still have nothing showing up under network connections.

As for the maping of the drive under tools there is no selection for maping the drive anywhere. I even did a search for maping drive and nothing came up at all.
This is a PITA for sure now. 24 hours of pure hell. Please someone help me out!!!

In Explorer, type \\NameOfSon'sPC\ with the name that you chose for your son's PC. If you haven't cosen one, set it by going into the properties of my computer, Network Identification tab. It should ask you for a password when you type in \\Name\ and you should type in the username and password that your son uses on his comptuer. Then, it should list all the shared drives and you can right click on one of them and select map network drive from there to make a permanent connection.

Thanks but the pictures are no longer working on the site and I have a extramely short attention span. all that reading is too much. I really need someone to go:
Click here, go there, clich this, ckick that, your done. I learn better that way. the first guy tried but there are some parts missing that wasnt explained. like he said I had to name both the same. I did that but it wouldnt let me because it said another computer with the same name was on the network and then it wouldnt let me go further.
Thanks for trying!

Explorer is all the windows you use to browse your files. Or, internet explorer. They are integrated.

The username should be Administrator or your son's name or whatever you may have chosen. The password is probably blank in your case.

go to network control panel.

click add protocol and add the "netbeui" protocol.....it is on the XP CD.

That should take care of your problems.

From there you can type \\computername in internet explorer address bar.

don't forget the \\

Okay, lets start this from the beginning.

How do you get the internet? Cable? DSL? It sounds like you have it hooked up like this:

Internet hooks up to router. Both PCs hook up to router. Internet is shared between the two.

Assuming that's right...your router is probably using DHCP to give both of your computers IP addresses. Did you set this up, or did someone else do it?

In any case, you want to check the following things:
1) Your computer and your son's computers need to have different names (sounds like you know where this is at).
2) If both of your computers have XP SP2 installed, there's a good chance that both have the firewall enabled. That will stop any communication between them. As a test, lets have you disable the firewall on both systems. To do this:
  • Right click on "My Network Places" and select properties
  • Right click on "Local Area Connection" and select properties
  • Press the "advanced" tab, then press the "settings" button there, under Windows firewall.
  • If it's set on "On", click it to "off". Then push OK on all the open windows to get back to desktop.
3) Now try to see if the computers see each other. On your computer, press Start, go to run, and type in "CMD" and press enter.
4) A DOS box will come up. Type in "ping MySon'sComputerName". (do not put in the " and replace MySon'sComputerName with the name of your son's computer).
5) It will either give you an error, or it will ping the computer 4 times, and at the end give you an average response time. If it pinged the 4 times, then they see each other fine.
6) Share a folder on your son's computer. Do this by Right clicking on ANY folder on his computer that you wish to share, and selecting "sharing and security". Tell it to share the folder on the network. Give it a share name.
7) On YOUR computer, press Start-->Run-->\\MySon'sComputerName (same note here as before - use the actual computer name)
8) If everything is good, it should pop up with a window, showing the shared folder on your son's computer.

Take the time to read Jack's page, it gives you STEP BY STEP instructions which is exactly what you keep saying you want. Install NetBEUI and you will be all set.

Well I have done it step by step reading and what people have said and I get nowhere so I have given up. I would do it to the point I am supposed to be able to share drives and folders but neither of the compuers find the network. I click on my network and there is nothing there. I disable the firewall and still nothing is there. I am able to play games against my son in different rooms so I am at a total loss why I cant network them even when going step by step. It has agravated me to the point I dont care any longer:p

Don't give up yet!!! Did you follow the instructions for NetBEUI on Jack's Site?

For me, that was the critical, final step. You're close, don't give up now.

Ok.. Do this for us..

On YOUR COMPUTER Go Start / Run / Then Type: cmd
and press enter. This will open a DOS prompt. Then I want you to type: ipconfig
and press enter. This will give you some information about your network. What I am interested
in is the IPADDRESS...........XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX (Interested in the X's) Then I want you go to to your sons computer, and do the same thing. Once you have this information, I could walk you through it step by step.. Feel free to post it here, or email me and I will help you through it. (my email is in my profile)

did you ever get this problem taken care of? i was having a big problem with this as well, but found out the problem.

here was my fix: Link

Error 31 when attempting to browse the XP machine
This error occurs if you set up a user account without a password, and then attempt to log in across the network. By default, Windows XP doesn't permit remote users to connect from the network without a password. To allow access without a password:

1. Go to Control Panel | Performance and Maintenance | Administrative Tools | Local Security Policy.
2. Expand Local Policies | Security options.
3. Double-click Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console login only, which is enabled by default. Disable this option
