Please help: how to start Windows ME in safe mode

I tried to run ScanDisk. But it always stopped halfway. Someone mentioned to start Windows in safe mode. How do I do that?

Hit F8 on boot up

Actually, F-8 will bring you to your boot-up menu...

Pressing F-5 goes directly to Windows Safe-Mode
