Dear all,

I am running my Duron 800 w/ Foxconn heatsink (with thermo paste) and Abit KT7A. When I tried to run Prime95 the VIA Hardware Monitor showed that the cpu temp. was 69-70c with system temp. of 30c. When I left the windows in idle, I got a cpu temp. of 48c.and system temp. of 27c.

Is it normal with a Duron o/c to 900@1.8v? Will the temp. be lower if I changed the heatsink to a Thermoengine or FOP32? I am using an Inwin desktop case with a 6cm case fan at the front and a slim slot exhaust fan at the back.

Thanks in advance.

a better hsf with good quality thermal paste should help.
would suggest that you first look to improve your case ventilation/cooling if possible to improve your cpu temperature before contemplating changing hsf!

Do you have good air intake in the front of your case? I had minimal intake and found that my front fan was recirculating hot air inside my case.

How much pressure is applied with your heatsink clip? I was using a clip off an old HSF for a week; hardly any pressure was put on the cpu (I could put the clip on with my fingers easily). When I got a replacement clip my cpu temp dropped 8-10 degrees (needed a flathead screwdriver to put it on). I also reapplied my thermal paste (much thinner)and I think that may also have helped.

My case fan was bought with my case for more than 3 years but the problem is it blows air towards the ISA and PCI5-6 so I think maybe thats the reason why the case cooler doesn't help much.
Last night I found that although the fan on foxconn heatsink ran @6000rpm, the heatsink itself is just too hot. Will it be better to change w/ a new heatsink fan or just replace it together with a FOP-32 or something with higher performance.
I am anxious as the summer in Hong Kong is very hot (30+ c). Now the outside temp. is around 15c and I am not sure whether my system can survive like this.

Thank you very much.

Get a new FOP32 and forget changing the fans. Add an air intake on the side of your case too!

:)
I finally bought a FOP-32 (the clip is extremely hard) and a new case fan (superred 8cm). Now I am able to o/c the Duron to 7.5x133 @ 44c fully loaded. Extremely happy with the result.

By the way, when I got the Foxconn heatsink out, I found that the original pink condusctive material and thermo paste has been forced by the heatsink and all being squeezed to the side of the die! So actually I have little or nothing to conduct the heat!

Finally, thank you for all of you.

Best wishes

Patrick

actually thats the way the thermal pads are supposed to work,
they are suppoed to phase change and get squeezed out. I would think that your problems were with the smaller and less efficient foxcon heatsink.
