PLease help cant boot windows.

Trying to help my cousin. Im not sure what to do. Can you help?

his coumputer won't boot normally or in safe mode. Upon starting it immediately comes to to a blue screen amd says that windows has been shut down because aproblem has been detected and under it it says

unmountable-boot-volume

this happened right after he installed the newest BF2 patch and it took about 20 minutes to patch (which was weird) then as soon as you started the game up it crashed to the blue screen. He would uninstall but as soon as he hits F8 and goes to the menu he slects safe mode and it goes directly to the blue screen.

Dell 8300
(not sure of the specs)
Video card Nvidia FX 5600

Most likely his hard disk is dying. I believe Dell gives you a diag CD with each machine, he should run that and see if it says anything.

he doesnt have his cd's anymore (lost in move) antything else he can do?

well he might have them (he's searching pretty heavy) but just in case what should he do?

Contact Dell, but the first thing their support will ask him to do is run the diag CDs to determine if any parts need replaced. I don't know if they'd be willing to send him replacement discs or what would be involved in that either.

If he has any other rescue CDs around (BartPE, Knoppix, etc) it'll probably be possible to boot from them and make an image of the drive. But if the drive is dying it could take a very long time to completely image the drive, depending on how much of it is unreadable.
