Please help a newb out

Hey guys, long time lurker but now I selfishly need help so I registered.

I'm trying to upgrade my old dell I7-860 and could use some advice.

I upgraded to a r9-280 and I think that card does really well right now (also upgraded PSU and memory).

Now it's time to change the cpu and mobo and I thinkI'll just go with the hyper evo 212 that people rave about. I want to be able to overclock but nothing crazy, hopefully that cooler will do. This computer is just movies and gaming. I will likely never have more than one monitor (other than hooked up to my tv) and 1080 is ok so I'm sure I'll eventually get a little better screen but not crucial.

My question is simple i5-4690k or i5-2500k and a complimentary Mobo for each that can OC decent.

I only like to upgrade computers every 5-6 years (where I am at now) but this time is different as I am now buying components piece by piece.

Everything I read is very confusing it looks like i5-2500k is fine for now but the 4690k will better future proof if I want it to last longer?

Money is only and issue because I am cheap. I figure I got $300 for a cpu and board and have my alerts set up on slickdeals where I know it can happen.

Thoughts?

Oh, I see, you already bought a bunch of DDR3, so you don't want to upgrade to Skylake and DDR4. Well, I would say:

If you care mainly about getting high MHz numbers, or you want to buy used on a budget, 2500k.
If you care mainly about overall performance, 4690k.
If you care about both, and want to buy used on a budget, i7 2600k or 2700k.

Edit:
and a complimentary Mobo for each that can OC decent.
That makes the 2500-2700 hard, since that generation of mobos is running out of stock. Unless you want to buy such a mobo used too.

Thank you for the great response! I think based on what your saying I won't care about the extra $50-$80 for the 4690k..... now just need a sale. Also it puts less pressure to max an overclock which again I am a newb at. Thanks man!

You don't indicate where you are located so assuming in the US. Newegg currently has a Gigabyte GA-B85M-DS3H-A motherboard + i5-4690K comb deal for under $300. This board can be overclocked. Really no reason to consider the i5-2500K.

The 4690K is a faster CPU, and is faster while drawing less power, producing less heat, and sitting in a newer motherboard with more modern connectivity options. The only reason to consider a 2500K is if you can pick it up for a song on eBay or Craigslist.

You don't indicate where you are located so assuming in the US. Newegg currently has a Gigabyte GA-B85M-DS3H-A motherboard + i5-4690K comb deal for under $300. This board can be overclocked. Really no reason to consider the i5-2500K.

The 4690K is a faster CPU, and is faster while drawing less power, producing less heat, and sitting in a newer motherboard with more modern connectivity options. The only reason to consider a 2500K is if you can pick it up for a song on eBay or Craigslist.

I'm not expecting any overclockable Skylake mobos to support DDR3. But I could be wrong.

the 4690k is a beast, you will not regret buying it.

also.. can you really buy a 2500k these days?

I could.... but that would probably make the cost more and as I undestand it I should be fine with the 4690k but please elaborate if you think I'm incorrect. If it's marginal increases I'm not too worried

Even that are now out of production... the only chips are i5 6600K and i7 6700K. Also, you need to change RAM to DDR4 and a MoBo (unless you go Asus, they have some mobos that uses DDR3).

Assuming that board has a BIOS update. You could drop a Haswell refresh CPU in and it won't boot.

Right, that board will not overclock at all without some effort to bypass the microcode problem.
