UO is one of the original MMORPGS (I think Merdian was the first). It is basically an angled top-down 3rd person point of view game alot like the other Ultima games. You have a ton of stats, and a large variety in what you can become. I loved my blacksmith/fighter in that game (My bard was really cool too). Looking back however, the graphics are really sub-par by todays standards, but boy was it fun. One of the best parts of the game was just getting stuff, like houses, boats, different colored armor, etc.....

Hunting for a house was killer! Me and my friend actually got one within running distance of vesper, it was so awesome 🙂 As CVSIN said, the best times were from 1996-2000, I played in the circa of 1998 to early 2001.

It was also really fun to go treasure hunting. Get yourself a boat and a couple friends, the sail around and find treasure..... ah the memories.....

I played UO for 7 years. I had a GM everything in that time, but kept the same character as my main character, Nebor. I like to think I changed the face of my shard over the time I was there. I participated in just about every role-playing event there was. I took part in countless UO weddings. I owned a tower. I had a set of plate mail in every colour... I did it all. At my peak, I played UO for about 8 hours a day. Sometimes on weekends I'd play for 24 hours straight, aside from the server downtimes.

Anyone remember the great wars you'd have in the 15 minutes before server downtime, when things had stopped saving?

So many friends, so many good times. I've never found another MMORPG that comes close to UO. I doubt another ever will.

So here's a  to Richard Garriot, and to UO, and to all my Chesapeake Bay buddies.

Don't expect much in the RP department in WOW. A lot of Bnet Diablo 2 kiddies are going to be playing as well.

If you want RP, just make sure that you joing a RP server.

Btw- I didn't bring up EQ2 to start the usual fanboy rants- I brought it up as a possible alternative to WoW. Unlike most people who say stuff like 'Sony sucks!', I've played both titles and I felt that for this fellow, Everquest might be better.

If you join a roleplay server on WoW, expect the game to be totally different than a non pvp server. If you join a non PvP server, the game attitude is very similar to Diablo2 where people don't RP and will probably mock those who do. The RP servers will have stringent rules to enforce it and the whole mentality WILL be different. I played Everquest on both a regular and on the roleplay server that opened a few years after the game came out and once I went roleplay, I could not go back since everything was so different I couldn't stand it.

Sony attracts them as well, don't expect EQ2 to be any better in that department.

EQ2 > WOW.

You are like the only person I have seen say that. I have friends at work who beta'd both and say WoW is hands down much better than EQ2. These are die hard eq players who have been playing since it first came out.

i am really sorry to ask this 😛
but can anyone tell me what is the storyline of this mmorpg.
i didnt play the beta and this is going to be my first mmorpg.🙁
is it going to continue from the frozen throne.?
i was reading the story at their site.
please let me know,as i am trying to convince myself to buy the game.
thanks

No real story line....
you got good on one side.. and bad on the other.. they cross paths here and there and beat the crap outa each other....

other than that its just hang out with your friends... do Dungeons and Dragons type stuff and have fun.

typical MMO with PVP
but more fun becasue its not as much as a grind as other games..

I played EQ as well and you cant even compare EQ2 to EQ1 let alone to WoW they are almost in a different genre within the same parent genre...

WoW is about alot of fun and PVP as a core element... with a heavy emphasis on being able to solo when you cant find a group..

EQ2.. lots of zones instancing of everything including city zones.... heavy group emphasis on even newbie quests. heavy grind and no pvp as a core element.

I bought EQ2 rtail agsint my better judgement after a beta I hated.. well stability is better but instancign city and other main zones is terrible...
trying to find a group in 5 versions of the same zone or even trying to find a friend that could be in West Freeport 1-6 is quite annoying...

well the good and bad depends on what you select, i really love the Horde characters.
also are we able to create our guilds??

it being more solo won't it get repetitve??

I played WOW Beta for most of a day last week. Uninstalled it the next day. I was all, wtf, am I playing DAoC again or something?

Frickin' A, somebody come get me when we have an MMO where you don't kill X number or spragonoidals or kobold waitresses/tailers to get another arbitrary level and kill bigger spraggonagadingdongs and kobold miners/cooks.

All the promise of UO has been dashed to bits while these inane "level up" games are released one after another in a frenzied grasp for a share of the "treadmill gamer" also known as those hopelessly addicted to carrots.

WOW is gonna be a great game... Then again most of my MMO experience comes from FFXI which wasnt exactly the greatest MMO ever... I tried EQ and couldnt really get into it... WOW just kind of seems to appeal to more people than most MMO's... Probably because its just so damn user friendly...

Someone rebuild/recode Original 1996-2000 UO with a Engine like WoWs.. now theres a game I would never stop playing =P

Yes it would ahve to be early PK/Dread Lord UO =P none of this T2A and after BS =P

I played UO way back in the day, 96-99, the game went to hell after that IMO...

Played most other MMO's since, and haven't really liked any of them till WoW...

DAoC is nothing like WoW, DAoC is tired and boring, EQ and EQ2 are for people with more time than God, I beta'd both EQ2 and WoW, and WoW is a lot better...

But the original days of UO were better, much better... nothing like sailing around with a few friends and pirating other people's ships... and houses and sh!t.

For all of you UO fans look into Tabula Rasa, Richard Garriot is working on this new MMO that is supposed to be uber kick arse...

Also, for people without any time to play MMO's, look into Guild Wars, GW isn't really a MMORPG, but it offers a lot of the good without the grinding and constant leveling, it is much more skill and team based...

As it stands though, I am buying WoW and playing it come retail

Was that the guild that always wore pink? They were at war with the vampires of Geneva, right?

It actually sounds a lot like UXO with instances and instant teleporting all over the world to hook up with your guild. I.E. It sounds lame.

I remember the day after UO was released and I and a friend waited at the entrance to Britain and gathered a small group of players to join us on the trek to Trinsic. In EQ, the boat ride from dwarf island to the mainland was a blast chatt
Also, for people without any time to play MMO's, look into Guild Wars, GW isn't really a MMORPG, but it offers a lot of the good without the grinding and constant leveling, it is much more skill and team based...

In lieu of a massivly open ended game like UO, I'll settle for a skill based MMO rather than a level based one. I'll check this game out next time they have a preview event.

Imagine if developers like Blizzard and Sony put their resources and energies towards quintupling the diversity of UO rather than trying to just streamline the EQ archetype. Sadly, there's not a game even on paper let alone in development that is doing that.

There isn't a game on the books doing what UO did mainly because it isn't an easy thing to convert to 3d. A lot of the perfection of UO revolved around a seemless / zoneless world. The second you add zones or restrict where boats can go, you've already lost the UO feeling.

MetalMat, WoW isn't UO but that doesn't mean it is a bad or boring game. 3 of your friends enjoy it for a reason as well as a huge number of other people. If the next UO is what you are waiting for, keep on holding your breath, but if a fun time with your friends is what you are looking for, I don't see why you wouldn't get that with WoW.

We wore blue and black, had an awesome little "town" next to vesper. We used to run around killing pkers 🙂

Orcs aren't in any sense the bad guys under Thrall. Taurens in fact are the only "pure" race in the game. Forsaken are evil but more slaves of their destiny. Trolls are somewhat evil but victoms of circumstance. Goblins aren't part of the horde. The people most refer to as "good" are the evilest races in WoW. Night Elves committed some major mistakes in there lust for immortaility. Humans are full of the corupt. Dwarves disgrace the land for their lust of gems and knownledge. Gnomes are simply curious to the point of being way too dangerous; they're like the mad scientists of WoW.
