Please explain to me this Twilight obsession

I've never seen any of the movies. They don't appeal to me. All I know is that it's about teenage vampires. I rarely use Facebook, but I was on there more than usual the last couple days and literally everyone I know was posting messages like:

ONLY 8 MORE HOURS WOOO!
OMG IM IN THE LINE RIGHT NOW FOR A MIDNIGHT SHOWING!!

Most of these were family members who I consider reasonably intelligent people. What makes this movie(s) so amazing? It's about teenage vampires....woopty doo?

Lord of the Rings are my favorite movies of all time, and I never get half this excited, and those movies are actually good.

Oh ok. Like I said I haven't seen them, so I wouldn't know. From the outside, seeing the type of people they seem to attract made me think they were probably crappy. But I wouldn't know, which is why I was asking.

I would normally have no problem with vampires and fantasy stuff, but I also don't get the obsession. It can't be the vampires, or any of the fantasy stuff because thats all been done before.

I would assume its only because of the guy actors... and that's about it. Everything else is an excuse to fanwank.

My wife went to the midnight showing with her 15/yo brother last night. They "prepped" by watching the other movies beforehand. I didn't pay much attention, but from what I can tell the plot is really weak. Good stories have something that draws the audience in, a hook, and then the rest is icing on the cake.

As far as I can tell in Twilight the hook is that one dude is a vampire and the other is a werewolf. If you make them normal dudes the plot is completely nonexistent. The hook is very weak and has been played before, and there's nothing else to back it up. I don't get the hysteria.
