Right after x-mas i bought an 8500dv. It almost sucked as much as my radeon ve. so i format and reinstall, load catalyst 2.5 (no 3.0 yet 'cause it is still buggy) and started up gta3. it was choppy and sucked. so i turned everything down for performence and it only played a little better than my VE. It's going back to the store, so basically tell me what to get for $175 that will BLOW my VE out of the water!

No more 8500's please.

Thanx,
matt

Your first problem was buying a dv version of the 8500, that is a cripped core not a true 8500 Radeon. Plus you didn't include your system information, so how do you know the video card and not your system was the bottle neck?

my specs

epox 8kha+(kt266a)
amd 1900+
512mb ddr
30gig 7200rpm drive
48x cd-rw

this rig isn't the greatest, but should feed *almost* every card on the market. The 9700pro is an exception but not in my price range. Hope that helps.

Thanx,
matt

The 8500 is good card but if you have $175 to spend you should get a new GeForce4 Ti4400, or try to find a used Ti4600 in the for sale forum. :)

GTA3 for the PC lags on just about every system... There's lots of graphical/performance bugs for the game. Especially when it first came out. Try getting the latest patch.

For the record, it did lag on my system..
Quick Specs > AMD XP2000+, GeForce4 Ti4400, 512MB DDR...

Your system could push a 9700 also. I had the same motherboard with a 1600+/9700, it ran great.
The others are right though, you shouldn't be WASTING $175 on an 8500, they are $90 on Pricewatch. If you have that much money for a VGA, you should get a 4400/9500Pro.
Beware used VGAs- OCing shortens the useful life of VGAs/CPUS, and you don't know what the previous owner has been up to.

I would go with the 9500 Pro, if you can find a store that has them in stock.
