I want to go back to school and get a degree, however I dont feel I have the extra time to commute to a B&M College......I am just wondering how credible an online degree would be on a resume? Feel free to give your personal experiences or recommendations for a good online school.

Thanks.

While this probably doesn't answer your question, you have a lot of reputable schools providing large amounts of online courses.

My company was hiring and they looked over someone who had a lot of onlne credentials. You'd have to really woo them in the interview to have a chance against someone with a degree from say a university.

Yeah thats one of the main reasons I feel online is the way to go, as I would have many more options for schools that I wouldnt normally have when going for a local school.

Edit: AMDUALY, that's the kind of scenario I was worried about. :(

Sigh...how difficult is this to figure out. If you get a degree from a school that's B&M and online, no one will ever know you went online. Make sense?

I see from your profile you are from Illinois. Two minutes of Google work told me Southern Illinois University, Western Illinois University, Eastern Illinois University, University of Illinois at Springfield, and I'm sure dozens more, offer degrees that can be earned without residence.

Actually there are 4 colleges here in my town.......however I will be a stay at home parent so I will not have time to attend a B&M school. Thats why I'm considering online schools that let me get a degree from home.

Uh that's what I posted. All those schools will let you get a degree from home. And no one will know you didn't go to campus.

Welcome to the 21st century.
I see little difference. As long as the institution is accredited, what does it matter.

By getting your degree online, and taking the courses at home, you are only changing the delivery method that is used to introduce the course material to you.
Instead of the standard "Platform" classroom approach, you use technology to its capabilities.

No. Nine out of ten B&M schools that also offer online programs will not distinguish between the method you used to earn the degree. This means the diploma will be the same, the transcript will be the same, you can join the alumni association, etc.

Here's a hint to finding more online degrees - don't search for "online". Traditional schools aren't the most cutting edge organizations. You'll want to search for a school's "external", "continuing education", or "distance learning" division. A lot of the coursework will be by correspondence instead of online. But the end result is the same, earning a degree without having to leave your house.

I went to NAU and helped program in many of their online courses. They have a pretty decnet track for a lot of various degrees and the degree you get is exactly the same one you would've gotten if you actually attended the courses. I think it is a great option. A guy i work with got his BAS in Computer Technology and for what he learned online and had to do i'd say he got a education comprable to what he would've gotten in a class.

Anyone know if cost of tuition or course material (books and such) is cheaper goin online than attending classes?

I'm sorry. The guy put down a lot of stuff he got from a trade school. My boss and coworker quickly figured that out while reviewing his resume and they mentioned that maybe he will know his stuff still. But he never got hired. I got them mixed up, you should be fine even if they do find out it was an online course. As with any interview, you will need to show them that you know your stuff.

For classes, no. However, some big state schools offer "independent study" courses where you basically teach yourself, the school tests you, and then gives out credit. That method is significantly cheaper. For example, Lousiana State University offers independent study at $270 a course.
